I got 2 X58 classified, both with water blocks on the chipsets and moffsets. 1 of these boards I want to put under LN2 this weekend, but I'm thinking the blocks may be problematic. Rom already gave me what I think is the right answer but I thought I'd put it to the group just to make sure.

So your opinion please;

Do I

- remove the water blocks and put back the stock cooling?
- remove the waterblocks, put down eraser or conformal coating and put the water blocks back on then cover em up with eraser
- none of the above

If none of the above, please elaborate.

I'm leaning towards putting the stock cooler back on fyi

Beh, I'd leave them alone. Make sure to insulate around them and you should be good. A little extra insulation on the pot might do you well.


I'm using frost king pipe tape and the only frost I see anywhere is the top of the pot..... I've been blowing the ac on the board to keep the nb cool. I'm thinking about hybrid-water on the board FTW....

What chipset block do you have? You are going to get some residual cold around the mosfets if your chip really likes the cold. I wouldn't worry about water freezing, but rather a little condensation around the actual block if it gets too cold. Good insulation should take care of that though.

I would lean towards keeping the water blocks, but use a small amount of anti freexze in the loop. Still insulte them well and eraser like you always would as well.

IMO this would give you the least amount of liability and the best chance to keep the liquid cooling advantage and remain with out incedent

I had eraser all over them with the DICE, but was mainly worried about condensation forming on the bottom of the blocks (where it doesn't directly contact a chip) but I guess if I just seal em up good that may be enuf to avoid condensate ?? My 759 has the bitspower chipset, which would be a bitch to remove, the 769 has the hydro copper which would be considerably easier...

I have the same dillema. I plan on some ln2 action if the future and i was thinking that i'd just eraser and insulate around the v-reg and northbridge wateblocks on my 759. i'm not as worried about my lines freezing as i am worried about condensation forming and freezing in those areas. Definatley gonna stuff shop towels in there though. So i'm pretty sure thats going to be my route. Eraser, shop towels and insulation.

I think the coolant running thru the blocks would keep the block from freezing up, tho I've never run a chipset block w/ln2 pumping thru the board.

I say insulate as if the block could freeze or condensate and then punch her in the guts.

Freezing never really worried me cause I'm thinking the flow would prevent it ?? Maybe some blue painters tape covered by armaflex and frost king would be the way to go??
