Problems with LN2 run
 

I play with DICE very regularly for the last 2 years or so and is pretty easy. And have tried LN2 twice but both the time, benching have not been really possible apart from maybe a single run or something. Basically get stuck with cold boot and cold bug issues. I am sure I am doing something wrong but not too sure what exactly, :( . I will list the steps that I do and where I falter :

1) Boot comp with empty pot to check the temps and all.
2) Pour very little LN2, boot computer with only half decent speeds like 5Ghz with low volts like 1.6-7v, all other bios settings mostly to what will be used even at higher clocks.
3) Boot to windows, and then try using windows tools to overclock further, through my DICE runs I already know what the chip and mobo can do, so I try to push them further up or something, now my problem is that most of the time even before crossing my DICE runs, the computer hangs. And then I am always stuck with the cold boot issue. I have to wait a long time before I am able to boot again and most of the time same problem after which I lose interest

Now one of the things is that, both the time the board has been a Foxconn Mars which I heard is sorta famous for its cold boot issue. Guess mine is something like -30c or so which only make things harder but before I try LN2 again I want to make sure I am not doing something which I am not supposed to do or I am missing on something that I should be doing.

So one of the issues is controlling the temp.(which I have heard takes time to master), or am I doing something extremely wrong there???

do you get the same cold boot problem with DICE :blink:

-30 is horrible... i would be cold bugging on phase..... as for temp control, just splash the pot here and there to maintain temps. but when heavy loaded bench you may find yourself starting to POUR and not just small splashes to maintain temps.

Im betting your fine, unless you just have a horrible luck with cold bug...

I dont think ive ever seen a chip cold bug at -30 but thats not to say its impossible

Its not the chip but the mobo which had the low cold boot issue, once into windows, I guess I have seen only once the cold bug, which was somewhere around -90c.

Don't you have any thermometer? I mean since you look like you're estimating cold boot temps. Otherwise, test another board as dinos said. :)

Yes I have, but those elcheapo ones, so not too reliable plus the tests were done around 8-10 months back hence dont remember the accurate temps.

Actually LN2 benching bug is biting me, but have been putting it off, so just wanted to make sure before I do bench, that I am not doing something wrong or not following the proper way of LN2 benching.

@ dinos, yes yes board would be something else for sure also, DICE benching I do with big blocks of DICE, so when I face the cold boot issue, I simply remove a couple of bigger blocks + some fanning, :) and since the temp. difference is not that much, get to booting in few minutes :)

Other than the cold issues, do you always use big blocks of dry ice.
It's far better to smash it up to what looks like snow.

What pot are you using ?
As ln2 would be soo much easier to control temps.

Looks like your board is the problem here. You should be able to hit -100C without any problems. At least I haven't had any ever below this temp. Make sure your board is insulated properly and try a different cheap mobo. :thumbsup:

Yeah for DICE always big blocks coz it comes in a full 5kg block which I have to break down to smaller chunks, its pretty hard/time consuming to fully smash them up like snow.

Pot is custom, fully made of copper, design copied from....dont remember, :thumbsup:

hmmm, I guessed so to, LN2 is so costly here that have to think 10 times if you are not sure that the run would give you some points.....cool2
