I have already asked a couple of you for identification of the missing cap for this gtx285, but I thought I might as well post up a thread in the open forum as well....

Plus I have pics... Finally figured out how to use the macro feature of my camera... The manual seemed to be lacking English....lol.

The problem... My brother probably damaged it opening the box, or the cap jumped off and ran away scared at his shear ogre mass.... :laughing:

Anyway. Here's the pic, I need to know what I need to put in the hole... :leghump:

Please go pro on this one guys... If I wanted "I think" I would have just started throwing caps on the card until it worked... :D

i have the same card...i'll look at mine later....its dead too LOL

you get that card on ebay Face? Their was one on their about 3 weeks ago that was missing that cap.

First off, that's a very nice pic. What camera you sportin'? Second, what revision is that PCB?

I'd just slap a big surface mount on it that fits the impression. Steal one from a dead card. They don't have polarity as far as I know. But that's not a "pro" suggestion......

Or, if someone with the card can measure it to get a sense of the voltage and polarity through it you caould solder the appropriate 2.5v, 4v or 16v radial cap.

I have a whole bunch of surface mounts on 5870's that I've lost modding/remodding/sparking and have a couple of radial caps soldered where surface mounts used to be...

CAPs have polarity mate. Look at the picture below. The colored side it the negative. Whats missing on his card is a resistor and not a CAP and this needs to be the exact value missing. Trying to find the right one can be a life time deal.

Your pic shows radial caps. And they very much have polarity - to the tune of glowing wires when switched (personal experience).

There are many types of surface mount caps as well.

We frequently will piggy back those radial caps on top of the surface mount ones.

I thought transistors had 3 leads? His pic has 2 solder points.

Edit: FACE, I suspect the only way to know for absolute sure its value is to have the manufacturer data sheet of the board or have someone with the card remove the component and directly measure the capacitance with a capacimeter.

LOL, no. The card didn't come from Ebay, but I know there are quite a few of these BFG's that have the same problem... My brother reallllllyy botched the RMA process. He probably told them to get eff'd... rofl.

Patch is right.. The missing part is indeed a cap. I think it's called a fart or farat cap or something like that (just wanted a reason to type the word FART)... I just need to know the rating so I can get once at least that size or bigger. Might order a pack of them if the volts and capacitance is right for cap mods (adding these kind and then ceramics on top for the win).

A good proper measurement on a good card should get the mystery solved.

Marking on the pcb is c1369. :thumbsup:

Sorry I meant resistor. Transistors have indeed 3 or more legs. All we need is Honda to take a look on his card and let us know the markings if any to figure out the value.

You wouldn't believe this if I told you.... I can't believe it and I just got off the phone with the guy...

BFG is rocking on the support area tonight.

The support tech had me register the card and he accepted the rma no problem. Too freakin' easy. :thumbsup:

Sux though... I kind of wanted to fix it because you never know. I may be getting rid of a 1000+ mhz gpu.
