DrNip's Dedicated Sub-Zero Thread

Yesterday I received my 1st ever K|ngp|n Dragon F1 Extreme Edition pot compliments of supes and I must say I am impressed with the pure mass of it. The thing was heavy. So heavy it was just $22 to ship it!!! Looks as though my drunken ant was quite fond of it too! :D

CLICKY CLICKY
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...h_IMG_4475.jpghttp://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...h_IMG_4476.jpg

Test platform was:

Intel Core I7 920 D0 Batch # 3845B027
EVGA Classified 759
Mushkin Acents 6GB DDR3 2000 8-8-7-24 1T
EVGA GTX260 SLI
PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 1200W
HSPC Tech Station

I will have to say that my CPU is a big let down for me. Might not be for others but it is for me. She is a dream on air/water as she can go high at low volts but once she hits that 240 BCLK things all fall apart. It might just be user error but don't tell me that. She also has a cold bug that starts at -50 which if you are on DICE that sux. Coldest I have had her on boot was -65 so it appears that it is at least from -50 to -65. I'm sure on LN2 she might fly as the cold bug prolly only goes so high and LN2 goes above and beyond those temps. So it was a trick at 1st but I managed to keep all my hard boots at -49 and below. Now don't get me wrong, I could get her at -50, -60 and what not and restart the computer just fine. It was just if I went into the BIOS and made a change that made the PC power down and then power back up on boot is when I was plagued by this.

Enough of the small talk here are some pics and remember clicky clicky picky picky! :D

Major modding of the tech station to accommodate the new setup.

I didn't get out of this session what I planned on but I did walk away with some which will hold me until the next time. Here is what I did, soon to be uploaded to the bot.

#1 3DMark 06 GTX 260 SLI spot. Finally hit 30k with my two GTX 260's! Those are the 1st 192 shader vanilla editions at that.
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...mark06_sli.jpg

#3 3DMark 05 GTX 260 SLI spot
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...mark05_sli.jpg

#27 SuperPi 1M spot. Nothin to really brag about here.
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...uperpi1m_1.jpg

#26 SuperPi 32M spot here. Nice lil gain in points when I get it uploaded.
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...perpi32m_1.jpg

My wPrime 32m and 1024m are already uploaded to the bot and placed me:

15 points awarded for 20th - 5sec wPrime 32m
22.1 points awarded for 7th - 2min 34sec 900ms wPrime 1024M

Finally a 5ghz run for my 920. Wasn't too much more but damnit it was 5ghz!!!

Don't think for one minute though I am going to lay down and lick my wounds. Goin to fire her back up either tonight or tomorrow night and give it a go around again. Also be on the look out for my new CPU. Hopefully it performs up to my standards. I am open to comments/ advice on benchin 5ghz and beyond.

Chuchnit 07-18-2009 06:40 AM

Nice scores to have so many issues. 30k is very nice with little old 192 260's :D Did you play around with all the settings to eliminate cold boot issues? There is a jumper on the board plus like three bios options.

DrNip 07-18-2009 06:41 AM

Oh really? Mind enlightening a noob like me on this.

Got to say on a side note, that Mushkin RAM is some sexy RAM. :leghump: That last shot I got of it was money with the blue light and all.

Chuchnit 07-18-2009 06:44 AM

Yes it is very very sexy :D

You have a jumper on the board. That I'm not too keen on so you'll need the manual for that one. You also have a setting thats I think extreme overclocking or something. In the manual it explains what temps go for which setting. Then you also have cpu impedence which is supposed to help when you are sub-zero. Read in the manual and I'll also find you a link to where shamino explained some of these and what he uses.

Buckeye 07-18-2009 06:45 AM

Looks good DrNip !

I had pretty much the same issues at times with my 920, cold bug at warm temps.

What I did to get past that and break into -130c temps was to pull out the CPU and take a blow dryer to the socket for maybe 10-15 minutes. I believe sometimes you can get a small amount of mositure underneath the socket.

That cured a lot of stability issues I had also, it was just acting very strange. I think it boiled down to just a bad mounting of the chip and insulation.

Also could just be the chip. Last time I ran my 965 it would CB if I even looked at -80c but I want to take another go it when I get it back as I think I was just doing something wrong.

Oh yes I forgot about the temp jumper on the MB, good call !

DrNip 07-18-2009 06:45 AM

What I got to read! LOL

I just couldn't believe I broke the 06 30k barrier with only two 260's on air at only 4.838ghz with loose RAM timings. Imagine if they were subzero and cpu at 5.2ghz with tighter timings.

There ya go buddy. From the man, the myth, the electrical engineering genious himself :D I think here he goes through some pretty good stuff for subzero clocking.

DrNip 07-18-2009 07:02 AM

Thanx bud!

Chuchnit 07-18-2009 07:09 AM

Anytime. Now I got go read it too and take notes!! I'm shootin' for next weekend to bench.

RomDominance 07-18-2009 07:39 AM

Looks like fun Nip, gl pushin her for more....
Chuch, thats a good guide Sham put out originally on the classy......there are some pearls in there for sure.

DrNip 07-18-2009 07:47 AM

Well the #'s are in. Back at 322 points!

Good work buddy!! Man don't you wish you could go sub-zero everyday?

DrNip 07-18-2009 07:52 AM

Thanks for posting this mate! I will get on this board next week as well! :D

3oh6 07-18-2009 09:51 AM

great start for sure, but remember, 240BCLK might just be the limit of your chip. my W3540 isn't as friendly over 240BCLK as my 920 is. with that said, here are some screens of the BIOS settings i use when running 240+ with my 920's and the Classified that is wrote up for someone else...

Quote:

Keep in mind these are the settings to achieve 250BLCK, and may not be 100% bench stable at 220 or lower, but should be. Either way, a good starting place for you...

http://3oh6photos.com/forum_post/xs/09_07/_MG_3023y.jpg

Notes for 3023y.jpg: Don't bother trying to boot over 220BCLK, well, try...but if it doesn't work just boot at 220BCLK and E-Leet your way up. Sometimes small 5 BCLK jumps helps get up high and around 250BCLK, 2 BCLK jumps work better I have found. PCI-E Frequency can be 113 or 114, if you can push higher it might be beneficial. My board will only do 113/114 with my GTX295, but will go higher for the GTX260. For all the 250BCLK runs I have posted though, I have used 113/114. The uncore multi is also something that can be raised but I generally start testing at the lowest possible, in this case 16X due to the 2:8 memory ratio, and if at 250BCLK the 2:8 ratio is likely all you can work with. If not, I want your memory and chip :)

http://3oh6photos.com/forum_post/xs/09_07/_MG_3023.jpg

Notes for 3023.jpg: VTT/CPU PWM Frequency may need adjusting. 490/940 and 610/1210 have worked for me. Some guys like 490/1333, so maybe play around with it, not sure how much of an actual effect it has. VTT voltage might need to be set to +100v (equates to 1.3v) and I would actually start there. Oh yeah, ignore the voltages in the right column in grey, they are what I am working on - memory at 1200MHz 8-9-8 :)

http://3oh6photos.com/forum_post/xs/09_07/_MG_3023x.jpg

Notes for 3023x.jpg: Nothing needs to be explained here I don't think.
Hope that helps you out but as said, this is for a couple 920's i have used and as we all know...plugging in settings isn't the key to overclocking, but hopefully the ideas behind my settings help a little bit. don't hesitate to ask for elaboration on anything either, i am around and watching

DrNip 07-18-2009 10:29 AM

Yeah I fear it won't do 240 and above. I didn't jack with the vtt/cpu frequencies at all. That is part of my new approach tonight I am going to try.

Barton 07-18-2009 10:34 AM

Hey Doc,

What is the white putty type substance you used to insulate the mobo area around the socket?

Did you lacquer that area of the board first or put any thing under the white putty to keep the board clean?

How do you clean it up once your have finished the Dice run and want to change processors or even reseat the processor?

DrNip 07-18-2009 11:00 AM

It is kneaded eraser that you can find at hobby shops like Hobby Lobby. I didn't use anything else besides it and the black neoprene you can see in the pics. When done it pulls right off. It is kinda like play-do but a lil harder to work with.

DrNip 07-18-2009 01:59 PM

Cold boot problem fix with that jumper suggestion chuchnit!!!

Able to obtain a lil higher clock messin with those vtt/cpu pwm frequency volts Jody!!!

Kal-EL 07-18-2009 02:04 PM

Thx for sharing the suggestion made elsewhere Drnip, care to elaborate?

DrNip 07-18-2009 02:07 PM

Post 7 by Chuchnit. He provided a link to a thread shamino over at evga. In it, it talked of a jumper next to the ram. One setting is for normal while the other is for extreme cooling. I put it to pins 2 & 3 for extreme and no more cold bug.

bluto 07-18-2009 05:06 PM

Great 260 runs DrNip. Is that condensation after a few hours of dice benching cause there's barely any. Did you do any with HT off ? These chips behave completely different on subzero for me no matter what kinda testing on air/water I do so the one time I tried dice it was a mess :rofl So what's the new cpu you gettin ?

DrNip 07-18-2009 05:09 PM

No all runs w/Hyper Transport. Just broke 5236MHz. Got some great superpi and pifast runs in too. I will post them here shortly. That was only 7 lbs DICE used and about 3-4 hours work.

Chuchnit 07-18-2009 05:12 PM

:wt::wt: Thats awesome about the cold bug. Care to give a quick rundown of tonights session so I can know what to expect on this board?

DrNip 07-18-2009 05:14 PM

Got to give me a bit chuchnit. Run out of DICE and time tonight. Might have to wait until morning coffee for a run down as I have to go deliver the paper on my 2nd job in a bit too.

DrNip 07-18-2009 05:22 PM

I turned HT off and actually did worse!

No hurry brudder. Just sayin' it would be nice to have your prospective about the board + subzero. I take it the F1 uses less dice?

DrNip 07-18-2009 05:26 PM

Oh I got ya!

Here is my latest runs:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...ell/Bot2-1.jpg

Chuchnit 07-18-2009 05:33 PM

hehehe nice runs bro. You see my shitty little single card run? I give up on that one. Moving on to 05...

bluto 07-18-2009 05:34 PM

:clapping::clapping: Congrats on the points haul. What temp on yer 32M run if you don't mind me askin.

DrNip 07-18-2009 05:36 PM

I hooked my 8600gt's up but got nowhere with them. Tonight was a 2D night for me.

Chuchnit 07-18-2009 05:45 PM

So whats the dealio with your 4890's? You getting some other ones, or waitin' it out a little longer?

DrNip 07-18-2009 05:53 PM

Nah I sent them back. I had nothin but probs with them the 2 days I had them. Goin to get a set again but waitin to see what drops as well as the price drop due out soon. Leanin towards the Sapphire Toxics but they are out of stock everywhere. Gettin me a gtx 295 though within 2 weeks.

-57 to -58. I don't think my multimeter is that accurate though as I can't get past -60 on it while others report -70 on DICE. Never seen that low.

All in all I am fairly pleased with my runs today. These are the runs I was expecting yesterday. Got rid of my cold boot. Big thanks to chuchnit for that one, I owe ya buddy. Got my CPU to 5.2ghz+. Hit 30k on my GTX 260's. Goin to have to say it was a good 2 days! Felt great to be back at it again. Oh and my RAM held its own too! I will give a run down, post pics and post my Bot scores in our bot section tomorrow mornin. Good night all.

I just went back and looked at your runs again. Very nice :D What kinda vdimm were you shoving down those Muskins to pull off 7-7-7 ? I know you've had little "quality" time subzero with the setup, but is that all the uncore your chip likes? I'm just wondering how much your scores would pop with say 4400mhz uncore or more. 5ghz should be doable with dice temps on a strong IMC. I know that my CPU score pops with 4400mhz uncore vs. 4000mhz in 2k6.

DrNip 07-19-2009 07:26 AM

I think I had them at originally at 1.65v but bumped them up to 1.7v which was prolly too much but I just wanted to be sure I had enough. These Mushkins are some really great RAM and I still kick myself for gettin rid of them the 1st time. I'm just gettin started as I have plans of going back and tryin to improve on these runs. I will be tryin more uncore. Startin to think I don't need a new CPU yet as once thought as I got rid of the two probs I had. Cold bug and the no 5ghz blues. I had an pretty good two day run. About 75 point pick up. A great day would have been a 100 point pick up! LOL

Jeffro64 07-19-2009 09:21 AM

That is AWESOME Nip!!!! Nice setup and scores for sure!

I can't wait until I get the time to use my F1.... I'm a bit nervous but i'll start with my AMD rig to practice on just incase I fry something LOL! :D

Neuromancer 07-19-2009 09:31 AM

Sweet stuff.

That link to the Shamino post was very educational as well.

Interesting to read an educated post about over amping as well.
