Core i7 Memory Overclocking "Madshrimps" Article

Quote:

Introduction

It has been a while since my latest article for which I blame examinations at school and of course the Gigabyte Open Overclocking Competition, which eventually led me to the great city of Taipei. However, since I have a few weeks of vacation now, I'm able to present you some of the findings of the Madshrimps team regarding the Core i7 platform.

Maybe you remember the X58 motherboard round-up which was published already four months ago, close to the release of the Core i7 platform. Having 7+ X58 motherboards at home (I was sent a couple more after the round-up) gave me, and my collegues, the opportunity to digg deeper into the different aspects of overclocking an i7 processor. In fact, we focussed on three different aspects:

BCLK frequency
Memory frequency
The combination of BCLK and memory frequency

As for this article, we'll be spending time on one setting that seems to give us the best solution when running into either stability or performance problems when overclocking the memory. It seems to be one of the key elements to stabilize the memory when running at high frequencies.

Nice catch supes. Goin to read this.

thank you for posting this man :)

I'll ready it when I have a few, I just got home from work.

Good read his bullet points need some work though.

point 2 I have only been OCing for a bout a decade, but softclocking memory to the bleeding edge in windows has always produced system lockups for me. Sometimes I get the BSOD, but usually it requires a Raytheon reset. (hard power cycle)

and point 3. Just means that he is running an Intel CPU, Large L2/L3 cache means memory is not getting accessed up to the 2M test. Doubled to 4M now he hits onboard memory, and crashes. Seems obvious to me.. (so I must be wrong lol)

Really interesting article, with important info:D

hmmm...I got a MSI eclipse, time to test out the theory, I guess.....

You can also check this:D
I did the tests with REX2( at ocxtreme I'm registered as linky):D

Yeah B2B makes a huge impact. On the eclipse plus, I was able to get 2000mhz 7-8-7 bandwidth @ 1650mhz 7-7-7- :D

It would be nice to see other manufacturers put out new bois' in light on this.

karmakazi 09-20-2009 07:37 AM

Yeah, Ihave asked shamino to pass along the idea to the evga bios gods to have it in a new classi bios.

Looks like my suggestion worked! Newest classified bios has B2BCL settings, and better boot up bclk abilities!

It certainly has better boot up in my experience. I couldn't swing even a 210 blck boot up prior to the 224 bios.

The latency b2b setting evades me tho so I haven't touched it.

Its best to experiment. When your pushing RAM clocks to the edge of stability jsut leave it on auto. But if your running more modest clocks, try using 10 and test bw. Then tighten to 8. If it will handle 6 is where some monsterous bandwidth kicks in.

Auto is set to 0

ReverendMaynard 09-28-2009 08:49 AM

eVGA 758 SLI has this option as well now.

punx223 09-28-2009 09:35 AM

I am reading this now.... as i am listening to customers :Dizzy::ohcrap:

Yes which also is "disabled." Usually if your on the edge messing with B2B will = instability/bsod/crash/freeze
