Im thinking the sf3d method is pretty interesting, he places the ihs less chip in the socket then places the ihs back on properly and holds in place while clamping down the hold down bracket. That way you can change the TIM over and over again but still get the pressure of the bracket. I can just see myself fucking up the silicone and not being able to get it back off to fix it lmao :taunt:

DOM 05-24-2012 01:55 AM

yeah ill give that a try idk if i should test before and after temps that to much work lol

done :)

punx223 05-24-2012 04:38 AM

remove IHS is really easy on IVB just remember not to dig Razor into Green PCB area of Chip.... keep it level or even point up a lil if possible.... the black is just like a rubber/silicone = easy to cut through once started the razor should just kinda glide through it nice and smooth.

punx223 05-24-2012 04:41 AM

also standard clear silicone will work fine but remember this stuff is not cement so can be cut off just like the black stuff :)

just dont use too much as some silicone can expand slightly and dont wanna make IHS contact worse than before...

If going for bench I would say leave IHS loose and hold on while loading so can be remove as needed.

running stupid cool 32m 5ghz 1.425v hottest it got 53c

DOM 05-24-2012 08:02 AM

Did it also lower the volts ?

Splave 05-24-2012 08:37 AM

^ just benched on ln2 and its worse lol I wouldnt do it dude. 20mhz less cpu-z and not even 6.4ghz 1m stable at same volts lol oops

It could be because I ran out of gelid and had to use this no name paste between the pot and ihs....I hope thats all it is.

DOM 05-24-2012 08:45 AM

No name paste really

I never used gelid before so hope for better results I got 5 tubes :)

GFDuke 05-24-2012 10:19 AM

Gelid = #1 paste

Splave 05-24-2012 10:19 AM

I swear by it, have 12 tubes in my garage lol just none at work....shiot
gotta wait for tomorrow then I guess

Did some aq3 tweaking on air and getting mem timings right. stock 7970 and 5ghz = 401k ;)

PhIlLy ChEeSe 05-24-2012 10:39 AM

Very nice Splave!
I had to send my third back for the cash, ill Look you up in a few weeks..........I'm on the injured reserve's

punx223 05-24-2012 10:46 AM

as much as I hate to admit it lol.... try EVGA Frostbite TIM.... for Subzero it is best I have used... just dont get it on your hands cause its a bitch to get off.

its made by some small offshoot taiwanese or hong kong company IIRC but it works awesome and is still malleable at -75C almost. whereas all other paste freeze solid at like -2C thru -35C

GFDuke 05-24-2012 10:55 AM

I never tore anything down at -75. loool But i remember AS craking and popping when it got cold lol. I've never hear Gelid do that.

DOM 05-24-2012 11:04 AM

okay im about to start wish me luck its my first time :ohcrap:

GFDuke 05-24-2012 11:10 AM

Good luck.

DOM 05-24-2012 12:41 PM

i couldnt get it off

punx223 05-24-2012 12:41 PM

good luck buddy.

punx223 05-24-2012 12:42 PM

duke its not about disassembling its about the rate at which a TIM can become a thermal insulator...

I will get some of what you use to test that.

couldnt get it started?

GFDuke 05-24-2012 12:59 PM

I think he couldn't pop the lid.

DOM 05-24-2012 01:17 PM

couldnt get it to cut in the silicone got the conner of the razor in a lil but it wouldnt go more and some sides you cant even see the silicone, i didnt wanna push to hard knowing my luck ill cut the green pcb or myself lol

i had already scratched the pcb so didnt wanna risk screwing it up cuz its working still

punx223 05-24-2012 01:22 PM

yeah be safe lol

Splave 05-24-2012 02:31 PM

damn bro its not that hard! you using a loose razor or box cutter? I noticed it would drag alot once it go dull. Used 2 fresh razors on mine

I got some of that frostbite/orange capped taiwanese stuff that is suppper silvery and pretty wet. It didnt ever crack on me but i just felt the gelid was a bit stronger especially for GTX-580 lightning imo the toughest heat load we have dealt with.

def dont get it on your hands, I look like this after a tear down

Splave 05-24-2012 02:50 PM

I had got me some new ones like you have in your pic.. it was like the ihs was so close to the PCB only the tip of the blade would go in a lil

Splave 05-24-2012 03:36 PM

I put the center of the blade on the corner of the ihs and just put even pressure in and up

DOM 05-24-2012 03:55 PM

I'll try that didn't think about bringing it to work but ill pick it up during lunch break.. so I can have something to do besides work lol

Oh, thanks....lol....did not even know. Only pastes I got are Ceramique, MX3 and CM Thermal Fusion. So I guess Ceramique is my best option??? I used to be merrily using the OCZ paste, Ignorance is such a bliss, :D

DOM 05-24-2012 11:52 PM

I did it now let's see of it still works when I get home to try it out :)

GFDuke 05-24-2012 11:59 PM

I'd use the OCZ not the Ceramique if those were my choices

Splave 05-25-2012 01:21 AM

gelid --> mx2 --> OCZ -->

How and when did OCZ fall from grace so badly??? Didnt we create a group order to get those last few pieces of these not even a year ago????

I had 10 of those 25grams of Ceramique when I went ahead with 10 more tubes of OCZ, :(

Splave 05-25-2012 02:55 AM

OCZ changed their formula with the new blue cap version now its garbage :( old school ocz was more like gelid xtreme

Splave 05-25-2012 04:25 AM
