Talking DrNip's Dedicated Sub-Zero Thread

Yesterday I received my 1st ever K|ngp|n Dragon F1 Extreme Edition pot compliments of supes and I must say I am impressed with the pure mass of it. The thing was heavy. So heavy it was just $22 to ship it!!! Looks as though my drunken ant was quite fond of it too!

CLICKY CLICKY

Test platform was:

Intel Core I7 920 D0 Batch # 3845B027
EVGA Classified 759
Mushkin Acents 6GB DDR3 2000 8-8-7-24 1T
EVGA GTX260 SLI
PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 1200W
HSPC Tech Station

I will have to say that my CPU is a big let down for me. Might not be for others but it is for me. She is a dream on air/water as she can go high at low volts but once she hits that 240 BCLK things all fall apart. It might just be user error but don't tell me that. She also has a cold bug that starts at -50 which if you are on DICE that sux. Coldest I have had her on boot was -65 so it appears that it is at least from -50 to -65. I'm sure on LN2 she might fly as the cold bug prolly only goes so high and LN2 goes above and beyond those temps. So it was a trick at 1st but I managed to keep all my hard boots at -49 and below. Now don't get me wrong, I could get her at -50, -60 and what not and restart the computer just fine. It was just if I went into the BIOS and made a change that made the PC power down and then power back up on boot is when I was plagued by this.

Enough of the small talk here are some pics and remember clicky clicky picky picky!

Major modding of the tech station to accommodate the new setup.

I didn't get out of this session what I planned on but I did walk away with some which will hold me until the next time. Here is what I did, soon to be uploaded to the bot.

#1 3DMark 06 GTX 260 SLI spot. Finally hit 30k with my two GTX 260's! Those are the 1st 192 shader vanilla editions at that.

#3 3DMark 05 GTX 260 SLI spot

#27 SuperPi 1M spot. Nothin to really brag about here.

#26 SuperPi 32M spot here. Nice lil gain in points when I get it uploaded.

My wPrime 32m and 1024m are already uploaded to the bot and placed me:

15 points awarded for 20th - 5sec wPrime 32m
22.1 points awarded for 7th - 2min 34sec 900ms wPrime 1024M

Finally a 5ghz run for my 920. Wasn't too much more but damnit it was 5ghz!!!

Don't think for one minute though I am going to lay down and lick my wounds. Goin to fire her back up either tonight or tomorrow night and give it a go around again. Also be on the look out for my new CPU. Hopefully it performs up to my standards. I am open to comments/ advice on benchin 5ghz and beyond.

Nice scores to have so many issues. 30k is very nice with little old 192 260's Did you play around with all the settings to eliminate cold boot issues? There is a jumper on the board plus like three bios options.

Oh really? Mind enlightening a noob like me on this.

Got to say on a side note, that Mushkin RAM is some sexy RAM. That last shot I got of it was money with the blue light and all.

Yes it is very very sexy

You have a jumper on the board. That I'm not too keen on so you'll need the manual for that one. You also have a setting thats I think extreme overclocking or something. In the manual it explains what temps go for which setting. Then you also have cpu impedence which is supposed to help when you are sub-zero. Read in the manual and I'll also find you a link to where shamino explained some of these and what he uses.

Looks good DrNip !

I had pretty much the same issues at times with my 920, cold bug at warm temps.

What I did to get past that and break into -130c temps was to pull out the CPU and take a blow dryer to the socket for maybe 10-15 minutes. I believe sometimes you can get a small amount of mositure underneath the socket.

That cured a lot of stability issues I had also, it was just acting very strange. I think it boiled down to just a bad mounting of the chip and insulation.

Also could just be the chip. Last time I ran my 965 it would CB if I even looked at -80c but I want to take another go it when I get it back as I think I was just doing something wrong.

Oh yes I forgot about the temp jumper on the MB, good call !

What I got to read! LOL

I just couldn't believe I broke the 06 30k barrier with only two 260's on air at only 4.838ghz with loose RAM timings. Imagine if they were subzero and cpu at 5.2ghz with tighter timings.

There ya go buddy. From the man, the myth, the electrical engineering genious himself I think here he goes through some pretty good stuff for subzero clocking.
