I have a cheap red cen tech DVOM that has a temp function. it works very good for phase and dice but i found out this last weekend at buckeyes place that it si sorely lacking in much more extreme cooling.
i tested it next to a UEI dt200 and while my temp probe was reading -87C the UEI was reading -126C just switching the plug over,
So please be mindful the cheaper readers will do good for decent sub ambient cooling, but if your starting to really get your hands into the heavy sub zero overclocking i would recommend getting a much better unit made strictly for reading temps, as it will be far more accurate.
Im sure most of you know this, but for those that do not, let this be warning

UEI and Fluke are the best and most expensive. There are some other cheaper ones that are ok.

Yeah I have the same as you punx and I swear it is 10 degrees off as I never see under -60 with DICE whereas I seen people report up to -70 with DICE on the F1 pot. I could or they could be wrong but it is time for me to upgrade mine. It was a good beginner probe though.
I like that second one ricks. Thanks for the post!

The UEI is probably better in that it uses only two AAA batteries vs six for the other. Both work well but the UEI just seems to be better built. Have heard of one failure of the EXTECH here at NBOC...:)

actually the uei dt200 is nice because it has 2 inputs and only uses a single 9v ;)

does it matter the quality of k-probes as well?

Here are details on my unit :

EDIT : The DT200 has been discontinued and replaced with the DT302
Fluke>UEI>Extech IMO
I've got a DT200 and really like it most of the time, it does seems to chew through batteries though. I'll probably add a used Fluke 52 if I ever need more than 2 inputs.

Yes it does matter.
I found that my cheap probes would not read all the way down to max LN2 temps. That was the problem we saw when running the Phantom, it would only show -156c at max, later on my F1 at max it would only go to -176c.
Could have been a combo of things with the Phantom tho.
But all this is not much of a problem for Core I7 stuff as you don't go to max temps and I have found they read fine to -130c or so.

So what probe do you buy guys?
Can you post a link from a cheap probe and a link from a good one?

Yhanks for the info guys! Yes...links for probes would be awesome too!

Any links for temp probes would be useless unless they have been tested. All I can tell you is the ones provided with quality units such as the UEI have proven to be accurate and reliable for our needs. I would'nt be surprised to find that all K-type probes are manufactured by just a few companies and not a nickel's worth of difference between them lol. Probably more dependent on the thermometer itself and the placement of the probes.

I got a Fluke 50-S single input. Ive been using it ALOT for 16 months now and it still has its original batteries in it! ;)

I've been looking at some Fluke temp sensors........they sure make nice multimeters, so I would imagine the temp probes are nice as well.

Just ordered a UEI-DT302. Tired of my cheap $20 meter. Would have gone with a Fluke but the price was a lil steep for me. I'm sure the UEI will treat me just right for $141.

You did well Nip - You will find it to be an excellent meter. Fluke = extra expense with no added performance.

That's what I figured. Of course there are those that will prolly argue the fact that the Fluke is that much better than the UEI but not enough for me to spend another $100. Of course what the hell am I talking about, $100. I wipe my arse with that when it comes to buying hardware it seems like. What can I say either I am an idiot or an addict! I keep telling myself to slow down but I keep forgetting what I told myself the day before.

Well I got my new UEI and it rocks. I now see how much of a piece of shht my cheap $25 Centech was. Temps are reporting up to -75 on my UEI with bench temps of -69. That is almost a 20 degree difference as my Centech only went up to -55 with bench temps of -45 to -50. Lets make a pack here. Overclockaholics don't let other Overclockaholics buy cheap probes! LOL

Well I always wondered about mine as people were giving reports of -70 with DICE but the coolest I ever saw was -60. I can't count how many times I remounted mine with different techniques thinking it was user error. It felt good seeing -75 with the new temp probe.
