View Full Version : err, fail run but COOL PICS
Heya,
i hate to say "omf omf im gonna have a ln2 run" then just dissapear and never say anything.
Anyway this is what happened.
E8600
XFX 790i
2x Asus 8800gts 512
Corsair Dominator 1800's
Corsair 1000W psu
Okey, i potted everything. Cards, NB, CPU.
All cool, booted the system and started clocking.
I found my max was around 600 fsb, so 6ghz it is.
at -45 on the cards, (they can both do 1150 - 1200) i clocked both to 935 core, 1185 mems. This was at 6ghz. I get a nature of 1725, that means i would get about 1850 - 1900 on 1100 core each, which is easily possible.
I ran in to instability issuess which is normal with the 790i, and decided to call it before something dies or before i waste LN2.
I ordered 20L in a 30L Dewar, so i think when i bought it there was only about 17l, and that went quickly in only 1 run. So i decided to try some single 8800gts on an air system with only GPU ln2 cooled. On my last run, i was going to finish a 2001 run, i threw in my last bit of ln2, and then a fan on the gpu fel of ONTO THE RESTART button. Hows that huh! So i finished my session with 0 results.
BUT i have the confidence that this system can take 2001 wr for dualcards.
Oh ya, everything was fine and working til the moment i power down. Now my 790i wont start. stays on "FF" so i think that one is dead. ;p.
Anyway, no scores. But im sure in future i will get that dualcard wr, i have to try. My GPU pots were amazing.. the load holding on those are Excellent, also the controll. I love them.
The cpu pot however failed heavily, pardon THE PUN. its way 2 heavy with way 2 much mass. I have to thinner the inside and deepen the holes before i can use it again, takes too long to get cold.
Anyway, hope i can still join in on 2001 low clock, will see what happens ey.

Keep pushing ViVi! I'll start dialing in this week and will try to get some half way good score with the i7 since my 775 board is in RMA. to_keep_order

i have a 790i graveyard at home
i regularly trip over 3-4 boards :D
i dont think i could have the patience to fire up the board again if i got another one
i cant believe it died with that kind of insulation as well :(
hopefully the CPU is not dead
you are VERY BRAVE for putting that CPU in the board VERY VERY brave
i lost two of my best chips in 790is

Oh I knew the answer, but I had to ask ;)
nonono, don't mess with my single card score!! I'm done with i7 anyways. There honestly isn't enough points left in it without going sub-zero for high uncore clocks. I don't have the time for the drive to get dice.

790i user here also, I so want to throw them out the window at times.
A board I was using for my main rig sometime ago with a QX9770 started to give me that same problem. I had to perform major jump starts on it to bring it back alive.
Take everything off the board, but the CPU and main power connectors.
Remove the battery
Set Clear CMOS jumper to clear
This is an attempt to get the BIOS LCD to display something other than FF
This would work for me and I would get beeps and a different error code, that was a good sign I had jump started the board with a different error code.
Now put back in the battery and hit reset button, if all goes well you should not get the FF but a different code.
Reset the Clear CMOS jumper and try again.
If all goes well from here add the rest of the equipment, GPUs, HD's etc.
The board should now post.
This happened to me many times, usually in the morning on first boot up and when I had a stack of work to do right away, it's like it was gunning for me LOL.
This was the only way I could get it to post when no matter what I did I would get a FF and no boot.
This board still works today and I am using it now. It still acts very strange from time to time and makes me want to smash it with a hammer, but I don;t give up that easy HAHA, either that or I like to have nails punched throw my finger nails.

Holy grail Buckeye! This is quit a revival instruction! :rofl I hope it works for him!

Try doing all that while the MB is mounted in a TJ07 and Phase attached. OMG I used to just want to scream.
It fianally settled down tho and worked very well for a long time, until I went Core I7 and pulled all that out.

yeah that used to work if it happened on non-subzero cooling for me too
it is very rare for them to revive after subzero with FF
but i have seen one of them spring back up i think >> not for long

Oh man, that sucks.
Really sorry to hear that it all went tits up at the end.
Put me down as another 790i hater, I had high hopes when I had mine, but it was just one issue after another.

yeah i had high hopes too
it was a great board my first one and really was very little trouble for me which was a bit of surprise cause so many ppl reporting all sorts of issues
but i killed it with condesation i think
errr then it started goin to shit one after another
only was without issues was that digital PWM but i could not get past 580FPS so i gave up on 790i altogether
true tho, i think this board is great, and very very fast, but it does have a hell load of problems.
yea dinos, thats why i got so ANGRY. cause with the eraser, it just died after running fine..
makes me not believe in erazer :?.
nah my cpu can tank it :D. If anything's going to die, my cpu would be the killer ^_^

Every single time I ran into an FF problem, all I needed to do was pop a different cpu into the motherboard and it booted up.
Its of worthy note that I was going between the yorkies and kentsfield processors in order to get out of the FF blues. So it may be related to the cpu's stock fsb rating e.g. 1066 vs 1333 vs 1600 mhz. But I'll tell yah, it worked immediately.
Good Luck Vivi.

I wonder if the small amount of eraser that I used on the Rampage Extreme may have been the issue. Dunno but I was in windows just fine, no video corruption with eraser covering the entire gpu pcb. Go Fish i guess, the RE is poopoo.

press on the bios chip pretty hard..... trust me ;)
also check and see if you have a red LED near the fan header... lemme know
the motherboards that i hated in my overclocking history was 680i and 780i so i never touched 790i :))
here an advice, dont loose time with it :P :P

Not again!
All your sessions seem to be doomed recently
I was wondering where you were, was hoping to hear some scores, :(
Unlucky about the board, but im sure youll have another pop at it next weekend ;)

Too bad it didnt work out for you Vivi :(
790i is one of those chipsets that when its workings its fuggin awesome, but when its not working its such a B@#ch to get going.
My favorite part of 790i was the plethora of memory dividers to work with... Intel could take some lessons there. Board clocked my D9GTR like no tomorrow, sick bandwidth too....
press on the bios chip pretty hard..... trust me ;)

yea but its not LIT.
all three next to him are lit tho. "ff" and all lights on, like super dead board >_<
cpu doesnt heat up, it stays cool so its not even getting initialized.
tried E8600 and E8400
