Well it looks like coming back is a thing.

Like many I have been away from OC for a long time now, man its been a few years for me. I still have a few OC items around... a monster SS build from Runmc which I haven't even turned on in years :(

In the past I built a fair number of HFT systems which are spread out all over the place, many still in use which I am surprised about tbh. 3960x machines I think they are at 4.8ghz and some at 5ghz.

But for the past few years I moved into review stuff and doing pretty much only Enterprise related equipment. Lots and lots of servers LOL

If you have me as friends on FB you would see a lot of it. Right now GPU servers are the big thing and I have a couple monsters here now, more coming. Sadly 99.9% of this stuff does not OC and the ones that can you can only get about a 104 BCLK on them.

So hi ! :)

Welcome back :) Personally I think many OCers got discouraged by the fast changing of the platform and no backward compatibility, also i believe the later platforms such as LGA 1150 and 1055 have not been so much improvement in performance and ovecrlocking has been disabled by intel ? To be honest currenty i have no idea what is the difference between 1150/1155/1156 platforms and also there is a LGA2011 ??? And i have no idea what AMD is doing but i havent seen some benchmark results posted from the HWbot like the good old Phenom II 965 with no coldbug and liquid helium cooling ? Is there now even a competetion between AMD and intel ? Sorry if this is a little bit OT but i dont know where else to post it :D

Sadly there is no competition between Intel and AMD anymore, for many years now. AMD will be coming out with 36 core Opty's tho, maybe... soon... who knows.

For me Socket 2011 R3 is where its at. The V3 CPU's are pure monsters with all the cores they run. Even that is soon to change with 20 core CPU's and Kinghts Landing with 240ish cores.

I haven't mess with desktop stuff in ages and only just received a Supermicro C7X99-OCE and 5960x here, my first single socket system in some time now. This is going to be a workstation, will be nice to actually OC again, if I can figure this board out LOL.

I am not sure what the dif. between 1150/1155/1156 platforms is either LOL.

Well we went for a long time OCing chips the hard way which was fun, but the drive for overclocking evolved into what Intel came up with to even the playing field.

IMO everything changed when Sandy Bridge came out. I remember hearing reports of 5ghz on air and I went suuuure, I will have to see it to believe it. Well we know how that story went. After that everything changed... for the better ? I think so, I was running a SS Phase changed system on a QX9770 or QX9650 and getting 4.6ghz I think it was and thought man this is a beast.

I was up at Intel Jones Farm and saw a Kinghts Landing demo. This system was 4 blades each one had 240 core KL chips.

Here is the task manager for 1 blade.

These now fully run Windows server OS's and are treated just like any other machine compares to Xeon Phi's

which one is best to set affinity to for PI? LOL :P

I will have to wait until I get one here to answer that :)

What up Buckeye ?

So far everything is ok.

Mom passed away a few years ago, I was her care provider for like 15 years with the last 4 years or so became very stressful. But now I am free to actually leave the house and travel a bit which is nice.

Wifes work had some ups and downs but everything is going very good for her.

Life is life, it is what it is :)

Well.......WOW

Feels like I just peeked under the skirt of an NSA computer. That's a crazy amount of compute power.

Cool read thru at the site Bill. What benchmark are you using to compare performance between setups?

Compare performance between setups ???
That might be hard to do as I don't think anyone else has systems like these LOL.
These have not really been benchmarked by anyone, except on a single card setup.

The plan is SPECaccel and perhaps sisoft Sandra if it will recognize these things.

Just wondering how the target shopper audience goes around determining what hardware they plan to go with. I'm guessing they just shoot for on paper performance numbers.

Nevermind, this server side stuff is a mystery to me, lol.

Many of the apps used are proprietary and no way to get any of this stuff, plus it usually takes a server farm to run. Its way over my head.

Basic's is... if your app is OpenCL code you would prefer AMD, if its Cuda based then only choice is Nvidia. Same thing like why did AMD cards do Bitcoin mining so much better than Nvidia.
