New build for Philly Cheese - Lots of pics. All new parts.

Let's start off with Big 3/4 hp condenser

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1019.jpg

3/4 hp Danfoss Compressor

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1027.jpg

Evaporator brazed up

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1024.jpg

Flex line brazed to evap

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1032.jpg

Cap tube coming up

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1036.jpg

Water bath to check for leaks

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1037.jpg

Evap is pressured at 250psi to check for leaks while bathing

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1039.jpg

I like to wrap the cap tube around flexline for added subcooling, then add rubber tape to secure cap tube to flex.

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1040.jpg

Big fat insulation

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1042.jpg

My work bench

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1044.jpg

I add a piece of copper around the joint where the flexline and copper meet. This is a spot where leaks can possible develop over time.

Closer look at splint

I shoot for -35 C at 300 watt load, evaporator temperature.

I have a lot more pictures to come. Unit is vacuuming now. I let it vacuum overnight
and then do a triple evac tomorrow and then charge it up with r-507.

Thanks for the compliments guys. It's all about taking your time and having the right tools mostly. And a little experience. ;) I like to post these detailed builds to give other people ideas on how it's done and also give the new owner the opportunity to see their new cooler being built. I learned a lot from looking at other peoples builds.
Here's a few more shots -

After I bolt the compressor on the deck, I like to run my discharge and liquid line. The discharge is the 1/4 tube going from the compressor to the condenser. The liquid line is the 1/4 tube going from the condenser to the filter/drier which in turn feeds the cap tube which runs to the evaporator.

Here they are brazed up.

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1031.jpg

Suction line is the flex line that goes from the evaporator back to compressor.

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1047.jpg

Everything is brazed up and I have it under pressure to see if there are any leaks. You use nitrogen to pressure test and purge with. Next I'll work on wiring.

250 psi pressure test

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1049.jpg

Wiring goody box

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1050.jpg

Wiring and switch done but I closed the cover. I'll open it up and get a picture of the wiring tomorrow.

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1051.jpg

I paint the copper to help keep it from oxiding and getting green and nasty, plus it looks a lot better.

:ohcrap: More pictures tomorrow. :)

Very Nice man!
I was expecting to wait, was getting bummed out. Great work! :good: Seeing as this is my first one, are there do's and don'ts? Like I assume its not good to run everyday, how will it handle a 6/12 core 2011? Great build log! Very Happy!!

Sure you can use it everyday. :good: I personally wouldn't go 24/7 with anything freezing cold. No dos and don'ts about the phase unit. It's all about prepping your socket and motherboard. I believe Bill (Buckeye) has a great guide in this phase section. Prepping for phase is not as severe as prepping for LN2. Someone here at your forums can walk you through it. Six cores are pretty hot as I recall. Give it a shot and see what happens. The unit is built for 300 Watt. Not sure what the 6 cores crank out.

After an overnight vacuum and a triple evac I put the r-507 charge to it this morning. No load testing and tweaking of charge yet. Maybe later today. It does get cold though. Seems like a great cooler.

We got some smoke coming off the evap if you look closely

Strong charge

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1058.jpg

I prefer to strap the copper lines down to prevent damage during shipping and just plain use.

http://www.under-the-ice.com/SingleStageCooler/OverclockaholicsPhil/IMG_1060.jpg

I still have some more insulation to do then some mesh and mounting. This will be day three since start. Not sure exactly how many hours I have in it. I'll have to do a punch clock on my next unit. More pics later. :good:

Instead of a dual head evap, use phase change as a liquid chiller. (Evap being a another rad immersed in a liquid.

Look up water cooler chiller for more deets.

correct me if I am wrong, but 300W is pretty easy to hit on a 2011. You will have to keep a good eye on your temps as you clock up, as once you hit near that load... temps will increase sharply.

Very nice work ron, super clean :)

How much one of these run? I might have to invest in one come summer. Got a 30' long shed I can use with its own electric panel :)

I'm not touching it till tomorrow as alcohol don't mix with Voltage :Hi:

runmc
03-27-2014, 03:38 PM
I hope that's water and not oil. Does the box look smashed anywhere? The way it's wet on one side makes me think it could have been laying on it's side. When you first start it up, let it run a minutes and then turn it off and let it sit for ten minutes. Do that a couple more times. That way the oil can move back into the compressor.
If there is oil inside the box, something is broken. Probably not though.
I'm glad you were there to sign for it.

PhIlLy ChEeSe
03-27-2014, 03:57 PM
No,
Its all intact. No wetness inside, unless its dripped straight out and I can't see it (inside the box is dry) its not crushed anywhere. I'll fire it up tomorrow, follow yer instructions..........
Thanks Again Ron!!!!

Hey Ron
I must be doing something wrong as at first it shot down to -55 degrees, then ever since it has slowly risen to hover around+ 20-30 degrees Celsius?
I have a window open on the condenser temps outside at 5 Celsius, at first it looked and worked great.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, is it ok to seat the unit next to my computer set up? ?Should the motor be higher than or below my setup? As the neck is long, and im not sure what to do with the extra(I assume keep it standing up)?

I shut it off for a while, see if it helps .............Need advice here really. Thanks!

Works Great, just no time lately. Not the kinda thing you wanna run daily, though you can.............

Just wanted to add, Ron's work is top notch! The unit holds fast at a steady -45 that's with a 3930K, my issue was I was trying to run it while the unit was even on top of the table. Unit need to be lower then where the head is bolted, I assume to make the separation up the neck. After a year I'm Very pleased with my price and the value for my money!!!

Ron!

Wow, u have no idea how helpful that random comment is to me. You see....due to the short length of my cascade evap line, I have been using the cascade almost parallel but predominantly lower than the evap line since the git go. I always wondered why I couldnt get the amazing -116c or so temps the cascade has performed at and now the light of knowledge has shined upon me!!!!

I must rip the top deck off the cascade cart and reconfig to allow a tad bit lower mounting of motherboard. Won't be an easy fix as extending the evap line but its hopeful :)

Thanks bromango, much appreciated share there. :)

09-05-2015, 08:10 AM
I don't think it has to be a big separation, but I assume the higher the board is over the pump causes more separation(better performance). Also if you can keep the pump RAD cool as more coolness equals better pump performance.........
