I just put my gamer back together with a P67 v3 MIVE, 2600K, and tri sli 580s. When I first turned it on it went to setup (as expected) but I noticed it wasn't recognizing the SSD, only the storage HDD. So I set it on defaults, saved it, then shut it down.
Turned out the hot swap bay the SSD was in had a broken SATA connector, so I moved it and tried it again.. and again.. and again... :ohcrap:
Board keeps holding up on A2 (IDE detect) and will not boot. Neither BIOS results in a boot, clearing CMOS doesn't do shit. It won't even go back into SETUP with only the storage HDD attached like it did the first time :argh:
Have swapped boot SSD for boot Raptor.. no difference. Doesn't seem to be able to find any IDE drives.
Any ideas let me know
thanks
hate the thought of draining it and tearing it apart if I don't have to :P

could it be the settings in the drive section?
you know, IDE/AHCI/ect try swap around and see what's up.

Can't get into the setup, hangs before it'll let me in.

Hangs without any drives plugged in?

Hangs without any drives plugged in?
Haven't tried that... will check it out and see if that makes any difference. Doesn't see any drives that are plugged in, but... maybe I can get to setup this way? tks, I'll let ya know
Ok, tried it
with no sata drives conected it now hangs on A0 (IDE initialization is started). If I press "del" repeatedly it hangs on b6 (cleanup of NVRAM)
???
Reconnected the optical drive and it went back to hanging at A2
Notice it spends a lot of time during the boot sequence on b2 (Legacy option ROM initialization).
no change when trying the second BIOS.
pull the battery for a few days?

I am not 100% sure what A2 is but A0 on my little book is saying keyboard

This the P67 version of the MIVE, is that what you have, or are you looking at the MIVEz?
Got even stranger. Thinking it might be a corrupt BIOS, I used the crash free BIOS utility to update the BIOS. Put the install DVD in as per instructions and a thumb drive in the ROG connect port. Started the computer and it went straight into BIOS SETUP !!! YAY! This without any hard drives installed.
Updated the BIOS successfully, then shut down the rig to hook in the SSD and it's refusing to boot, hanging at A2 again.
Put the install disk into the drive again and did a cold boot... straight to A2 again, no setup :argh:
PS, I'm using a PS2 keyboard which worked fine the one time it went into setup, so don't think I have a keyboard issue
STRANGER STILL
Ran the BIOS routine again, got it to reset and go through the entire boot sequence - still no bootable drive installed. Hooked up the storage HDD and it went through the entire boot up until it told me to select a bootable drive.
So I hooked up a bootable drive - NO BOOT .... AE - legacy boot event!! This is with the SSD that was formatted for this system.
new
Got it restarted with the install disk, reinstalled the new BIOS, it restarted itself and hung on AE which is a "legacy boot event" :wtfsign:

yeah, but what?? thought it might be my hot swap bays, so I bypassed them and still the same shit
No probs booting with a non bootable HDD in the system
PLUS in BIOS, it only indicates two video cards :( all switches are ON

id say unplug every single SATA drive in your rig and see what's up.
and is it under warranty? I'd say just RMA the sucker if your board is still under warranty.
this is my way of fixing stuff :p oh it is taking too long to fix? alright i'll kill it completely and send it to the manufacture.
I have a universal boot code book, it has AMI, AWARD, Phoenix and IBM codes, too bad its in Chinese or i'd post it on here already. I picked it up when I was in China 2006 and for all the years i've been using it it hasn't failed me once

tbh, i really think it's your board dude. everytime i get hell for random codes it always turned out to be the baord and once i swapped out the board it works....

This is the key.
Wipe the drive and do a fresh install.

Hey Scotty,
I've tried booting with two different drives that were formatted for the board while it sat on my Banchetto rack.
I'm seriously thinking it's an electrical issue of some sort. Guess I'll have to drain it and tear it apart. Hopefully the new water block isn't shorting something on the motherboard  That is new to this build, so it's highly suspiscious (to me at least  )

Ok, for kicks I started the rig, no HDD or SSD attached, and it booted right up from the install disk. Went into BIOS and found it was set on legacy instead of ROM, switched that.
While it was running I attached the SSD to the Intel 6gbs port and the storage HDD into the 3gbs port. Set the SATA to IDE, saved and rebooted.
Went right into Windows :clapping: Automatically installed a shitload of drivers but the video driver install failed, no probs.. it was the sucky MS version anyway. Rebooted and tried to install the latest from NVidia via thumb drive - install failed because it didn't find any compatible video cards in the system :wtfsign: GTX 580s aren't Nvidia compatible?.
So I booted again and it's now back in it's same old hang at A2 nothing I do will get me back into windows.
Disconnected the SSD and HDD and still hangs
taking the damn thing apart today :argh:

Try to boot with only 1 vid card. Might have a bad one or slot working against you.

Sounds like a controller problem on the ssd,
update frimware or take it out back and put a bullet through it and buy a Sammy
Guessing you are using a Sandforce controller
Make sure you have it on SCSI, not IDE and make sure you are in the primary 6GB port off the chipset, not a Marvell controller

It sounds like its trying to boot to the hdd and not the ssd. As far as the video cards go I have no idea other than what Scotty said. I really don't think plugging in your ssd and your hdd while in the bios was a good idea though. Sounds scary. And if the board wont boot with just your OS disk in it then yea somethings wrong with your bios. imo. I would reflash it.

yeah, figured the BIOS too, but flashed it several times now. Won't boot off the SSD or the Raptor which are both boot drivers (not in the rig at the same time). Turned off the slot with the third card in it, didn't seem to to much help.
Pulling the tri sli out tomorrow and trying it with a single air breaher but I don't expect that to help.
Just weird how it works sometimes and not others... would think it would be all of one or the other
thanks for all the advice though

Try un seating two of the three video cards(I know there on a loop) but it can be done without removing everything. Sounds like the controller on the board for the hard drives is borked or not enough voltage.
I know I'm saying this to you but(DO NOT BE OFFENDED!) Try the minimal approach, sounds as though a dieing PSU or memory stick? Remove the battery and do an over night Cmos clear.

Hey, no offense ever to help I requested bro :) One possible I've been turning over in my mind (where else would I turn it over ) is that one of the cables to the PSU may not be in securely enough - or - it may have been compromised by my stuffing the little rad down there against all the cables. I actually do think it's an electrical issue.
The really weird thing is how sometimes it works, sometimes it don't
Pulling the tri sli today (which will give me access to the battery) and once the loop is drained I can pull the little rad and check all the connections to the PSU too.
No rest for the wicked :ohcrap:
PS. Gonna plop the tri sli onto my Classified e759 which is currenly serving as the mobo of my alternate gamer with the 980x and GTX 680. I'll drop the 680 into the borked rig once I do a once over (and re-route the water to the cpu and chipset only) and see what happens :P

Usually when its a bad contact on the PLUG of a PSU its in the four pin plug, they get elongated(stretched out or open) use a pick to pry them snug(female ends). There a pain in the ass! Also if there is a four pin on the main board, I was leaning towards a dieing PSU as it seemed intermittent.....One video card in see if it goes away, then add on if you have three of some other card without the water connections.

lol
pulled the tri sli this morning and hooked it up on the classified, which was a pita since the banchetto wasn't setup for water at the time. Booted but no pic so I did some jumper moving and found cards 1 and 3 in the array weren't working :ohcrap: Everything ran fine using only the middle card except the hard wired lan was dead :wtfsign:
Pulled it all of and put the 680 back on the classy and everything works fine again on that one.
Guess I'll have to try the 680 in the P67 just to see if that's the issue. AX1200 PSU that's virtually new and all the voltages read good so it's looking like the cards, but, that really don't explain why it wouldn't even goot :ohcrap:
Just got to figure out how many parts I'm gonna have to RMA now :D
