Well anyone who follows this section knows my last build log was a bit to ambisious and turned out to be an epic fail ......... if you did miss and that is entirley possible here it is

http://www.overclockaholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5226

FYI: I ended up assemeling that rig in a Bit Fenix Colossous, it is a way cool case but I have to say it was less than stellar. Anyway I have decided to go back to my roots and build something that I think anyway will be pretty effin cool.

This is going to be a long protracted build thinking it will go into the summer as some of the parts may not be availible until then. Or depending on what I am reading may decide to stay with SBE.
Anyway I will be starting this build by intergrating the cooling sytem into the case and inserting hardware as final specs become availible

Goal: To build something that looks great and kicks major ass AKA show and go, And practical of course .......... :ohcrap:

To summerize you simply can not imaging how big this beast is, Have sworn by Lian Li since 1999
Have had many and loved them. However there is a new kid in town and I am here to tell you.
While you could argue the Lian Li is a bit more vouge and elegant, They are mere toys compared to the professional level construction of the Case Labs product.

For you older gentelman it is Tim The Tool Man Taylor Approved ...........

completly modular put anything anywhere .... PS bay is large enough to house a single stage with room left over
Maybe next build ..........
Can house up to 32 Hard drives or 64 SSD's or any combonation of both. Any MB made will fit and will do 4x480 out of the box and 5x480 with bat adapter. I used an SSD to try to give it some scale

Thinking I will grab a high perorming one when the time comes and if it does not perform better than the stock one sellit for a small loss. This way I will have definative information for the final build spec. I think your are right though, from what I have been reading high flow will serve these temps better than high surface area

Should be fine, will still hit 1GBps transfers and small file size wont be hindered.

Really not sure yet what platform I am going with yet. Fianacially if I want to expidite this I would have to use my current hardware and in that semario, 2 off them would have to roll on 3gb ports.

If I wait it out and that is the plan as of now possbly next gen boards will offer enough 6gb pots for what I hope to do.

What Rads do you have, I am sure we can comme iup with some fans that will work nicely.

I went with a low 8 FPI that will lend itself to these low noise low speed fans, if the fins on your rads are similar thse fans would work well, the tighter the fins the mir air/noise you need to max the efficincy of the rad as they will have a higher drag

That is a nice rad, Very tight FPI like 16

300 watt load / water temps above ambient

1000 RPM = 9.86C

1350 RPM = 6.39C

1550 RPM = 5.06C

2000 RPM = 3.3C

3000 RPM = 1.87C

You can see where the this tight fin design of this rad lends itself to High speed fans

This would be optimal for you set up, just make sure you have fan gaurds as these bad boys will cut a finger off and at 44db buy some noise canceling headphones

The Boreas tesing has been completed with mixed results. I has shown it would be worth while endevor supplying temps 15C better than ambient water on a hot running 3770K Ivy Bridge CPU, This thing would be epic on Sandy. As I do not know what the final CPU will be this is a good enough result to move forward. That being said I will be starting the build beging with the cooling sytem.

Witchdoctor
02-11-2013, 12:47 PM
Well all pumped up to come home and get started, This is where Epic Fail comes into play, it doesn't fit........ :ohcrap: All the measuring and drawing I have done has made no difference.

I need an 1/8" .......... with no way to get it with out chopping into this case, That is not going to happen on this build, This is my own dumb fault, some how I miss typed the dimensions when sending it to case labs... if it was the demension was supposed to send I would have a 1/8" to spare, sometimes an 1/8" is a mile ............

I am completly shocked as you all know what an acomplished typist I ma ???? :scared:

Anyway On plan B and C already , I will be moving forward under the presumption of Ambient air and 4 quads 2 for the CPU and 2 for the GPU's that should still easily produce a formatable gaming rig

Shhhh.............
Secretly in the lab  I will be stripping down the Boreas and working water coupling the blocks to see if I can get a satifactory result that way. mind you I will be loosing the capacity of two blocks and TEC's so temps may be less than stellar to spite a more effective way of removing the heat ....

But you never know unless you try ..............

If it does work fabbing up a rack for them that will easily fit will be a piece of cake

Witchdoctor
02-11-2013, 11:06 PM
Wow, I appreciate that Rick, However I am diggin the new case to spite this set back. I am not out of the game yet and may be able to use it in a different config, if not I will still have it for benching and a future build. With wattage and efficincy at the forfront of CPU and GPU tech the Boreas can only become more relevant as tech gets better.

Thanks Bro ..........

Neuromancer
02-12-2013, 12:12 PM
If you water cool those tecs, that would be sweet. use one quad for the tecs. tecs straight to CPU. 2 quads for a GPUs... If you do add a quad for the cool side of the TEC loop, try it with no fans then low speed fans first :)

There is always the option of insane TEC cooling as well. Say 200w?

It is $45, but bear in mind it needs a power supply/regulator those uh, 24v maxwells (?) that people started using for GPUs a few years back

http://www.newark.com/multicomp/mcte1-19913l-s/peltier-cooler-200w/dp/08P1466

another consideration, getting some 15V units and just running them at 12v (they dont sell 12v)

Costs a bit more, on tec side but you could actually run them off a PSU... 2x15v 130W TECS at 12v = probably close to 200W cooling without needing separate PSU...

Yeah I know it wont look as cool as the Boreas either.

Witchdoctor
02-12-2013, 12:46 PM
I have Zero experience with TEC's ........... :ohcrap:

So the biggest hurdel is learning how they work to be able to impliment action. Right now the plan is to take them off the Boreas, use two of the 4 to cool and the other two disapating the heat off the twoi cooling TEC's ... Just sandwitching them if you will to meet surface requirments, if that makes any scence at all, problem is I will cut my capacity in half and in doing so will the water heat disapation make that much of a difference gain back 100% of the performance as that would be the break even to air coupled, TBH I would be happy with that or a little better. Right now the unit does 15C better than ambient water, not sure if you saw my results table a few pages back, but here it is again if you didn't. Being I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer is there any math that can give me the answers I need based on rad surface, air speed across the rad and pump flow rates based on the output wattage of the TEC's and if so does anyone here know what the formula would look like if I could plug numbers into it ?

One thing is for sure Rich, if it works I will make it look good doing it ........

Neuromancer
02-12-2013, 01:17 PM
first of all...

dont sink more money into this.

TEC cooling was really popular about a decade ago but was quickly realized to be an inefficient way to subambient cool.

If you are not getting subambient temps with your TECs then you are REALLY inefficiently cooling.

Here is the thing.

A TEC works by adding say 200W of electricity into this device and removing 150W of heat. It does not move it far, just from one side of the TEC to the other. Now after adding all that power to the TEC you still have to cool it.

Historically, a TEC is mounted to a CPU, then a waterblock is mounted to the TEC.

the boreas uses muliple TECs instead ofa single unit for the following reasons.

1) if on TEC fails the others are not affected
2) using multiple units allows one to space out the heat shedding to make a air cooler more efficient than a single 130W load.
3) Smaller TECs tend to be more efficient than larger ones
4) and this is related to 1/2 & 3.. cooling the hot side of the TEC more efficiently leads to better efficiency on the cold side.
5) smaller tecs used to be WAY cheaper than large ones so it was cheaper to run multiple smalls than a single large.

the problem you are having is temp swings. so what you need is a large mass to help maintain temperature levels (just like a LN2 pot or something) So try a copper clug or an alum one.

Realistic Ideas I can think of in your situation. (Honestly I would straight water cool, because hte increased electric cost for running the TECs and NOT getting subambient cooling is not worth it)

a) single high wattage TEC on a large copper slug mounted directly to CPU. Hot side goes to a waterblock and a single quad rad is capable of shedeing 5-600W of heat IIRc.. the lower the laod the more effective, like anything except electricity...

b) build yourself a watercooled boreas. the idea is basically you are removing that giant air cooled part and replacing it with a waterloop. Since I doubt all 4 of those tecs fit on a single waterblock you will probably be left with some kind of aluminum or copper block mounting. to get everything connected.

c) screw it, fuck ivy bridge, go back to SB and get yourself a nice waterblock and run single digit deltas with a single quad rad :)

Thanks for the insight Rich,

I think you have convinced me this is an effort in futility.

I will have to rethink my stratagy.

Ultimently this is really being planned out as an SB-e or Haswell build, Ivy is just what I had in the rack and with it being a heat monger thought it would be a good test bed

But from what you said about the power usage has me thinking as my grinnder basicall never gets turned off ........... :ohcrap:

Neuromancer
02-12-2013, 07:13 PM
dude, I would love for you to play with TEC more and school us all in how it can be, there are just certain reasons why it never made mainstream and it was not condensation.

No reason not to slap that boreas on an A6 AMD APU and clock it up to 5.5 GHz drop in a single SSD and run CPU and IGP at ambient temps as far as I can tell.. And run your awesome X79 as an awesome x79... (just pretend you are powering an socket 2011 setup :))

No tec= quad rad for CPU alone I did on i7 1366, just the rad.. no LN2 no nothing and pushed the board limits 24/7. my setup never ran not 220+ out the windows for 240 atempts :) same setup released two screws and BRRR

TBH I am just upset you spent the money on the boreas. no matter what you got it for. It upsets me.

O well, it does do better than water alone based on my testing.

So it does have some value and with wattages coming down so I believe one day viable solution again.

I think for now I will side line it and move in an overkill ambient water solution.

Had some time this morning and installed rads, fans, resivors & pumps on the front side of the build. Odered a 250 mm res tube so if my metric conversion was correct will bring it uo the the exact same hieght as the left one, also grabbed some fill ports and multi link adapters to pipe straight out of the top using solid 13 mm arcrilic tubing found in New Jersey, being multi link is for 12mm tubing it will be a tight fit, but think it is doable, may need to grab some Orings that are a touch thinner , if not can use some simple compresion adapters

Looking at new boards the EVGA Dark and the Asus WS IB-E ready varients so it is plug and play when IB-E hits the streets , rumor has it these will hit the streets at the end of March begining of April.

Have you thought about shut offs to each component? It makes it alot easier to swap out hardware when you need to. And, you won't have to drain the whole system.

What size copper is that?

Looks really nice bud. Awesome work. I am very jealous.

ThreeDhero
03-24-2013, 03:48 AM
Is that 1 full loop WD or did you split cpu and gpus up?

You've one amazing gamer now man outstanding cable management! Copper piping just sets it off and keeps it super clean looking bud. :clapping:

How are you treating the copper to prevent oxidation?

GFDuke
03-24-2013, 04:54 AM
Oxidation can be handled with the type of coolant you put in the loop i think.

Witchdoctor
03-24-2013, 06:13 AM
Thanks guys,

@ Duke,
No I did not install shut off, but I do have a drain down valve on each loop and piped as such to be able to drian below the component it is piped to. SO while a lot of coolant is lost it is pretty painless so to speak. Being this is a gaming rig do not plan to tear it down a lot, Possible an IB-E upgrade when they are released if they are worth the price of admission . It iis 3/8' OD, smaller than typically found in PC water loops, but the piping has much less drag than the typical poly we use in water coooling

@ 3D
it is two seperate loops CPU/GPU

@ Rich
Using distilled water and PT Nuke. Not much corosion can take place in a closed loop. No diffferent than using copper blocks. Water corosion typically takes place in an open system, Like the corrosion you get at the spout of your faucet, that is because new water is introduced each time you turn it on, Once water disperses it mineral and corrosive proerties it is then nutrilized. This is why water makes an effective coolant in engines, and frozen yogurt machines ......

rickss69
03-24-2013, 08:11 AM
Only thing I can think of is maybe clearcoat the lines to prevent them from turning funky colors like copper is prone to do.

GFDuke
03-24-2013, 10:46 AM
Thats gonna be hard since they're in the case already. Only other thing i can think of to do that now would be clear nail polish. Short of taling them out to coat them.. But yea i agree. the copper won't stay bright unless it's coated. Still a matter of taste. But i would be a shame to see it turn dullk

No did not enter it in any ROM contests, got bigger problems

Getting a B2 error .. can't even get to the BIOS it is a vid error, so something going on. tried everything. called MSI and they are going see if they can recreate the error on their end to see if it is a board issue, so they say. Giving them 24 hours before I tear this down. They are concerned the board has an issue with the card, I find it hard to believe but they seemed genuinely concerned once I told them the cards were Titans and swaping cards out was more than I could do over the phone. Hoping it is something like a BIOS update as I can have them flash a chip and send it to me. Reminds me Have to check, hope they are not fixed BIOS chips

Could be a dead card .......... :ohcrap:

Just took the cards out, wow it was easier than getting the poly off the barbs, with the drain valves I put in just had to open it lossen 4 nuts and done ... took all of 5 minutes to remove the cards, two loops = WIn I can still have the cpu under water with out having to replace the cooler so I can test vids only or CPU only. Thought it would be a bitch but the copper turns out to be easier to remove than poly

Anyway slapped another card in and off she went, going to check now few a new BIOS throw it in and see if that was it, if not one or both of these Titans are toast ... :ohcrap:

What up bro?

gotta say I am loving it the little bit of time I have had to play. I dominates anything I throw at it even at 2560x1440 with eye candy maxed out.
The MSI is treating me well at 4.8 24/7 and as expensive as the Titans are they are no joke, have not even seen them break a sweat thus far.

Had a major turn around here in work as we actually are swamped, probably the first time since 2006. Went from five guys working for me to 17 with in the last month and a half, Work is crazy doing 12 to 14 hour days, cheap ass boss is still not giving me anything more other than a few small bonuses here and there. :ohcrap:
I have sold over 2.5 Million already this year that is more than I sold for the entire 2013

That and building a deck on my my house has eaten all my time up. Hard to get excited about Haswell as I am just dead beat tired all the time burning the candle at both ends.

Hoping once I am done with my deck I can chill for a bit and see what Haswell brings to the table. Hoping 7/26/13 is still a good date to meet you, Al and some of the crew in person at the East coast OC campain in Buffalo..........

I am changing my heating system over to Natural gas. So that means new boiler/burner/ hot water system. But, in the end i'll save over 2k a year in heating costs. And, the wife wants a pool. No kidding bro, Natural is the way to go, My gas bill was $ 42.00 last month around $ 110.00 in the hieght of winter, here in PA you stick a knife in the ground and it starts pouring out of the ground. Upstate used to be a bunch of Hillbillies, Now they are all millionars ....... We are doing ten natural gas conversions a week here. A pool is cool, but adds a lot of work ...... :ohcrap:

I will have to look?

TBH though pretty happy with 5.1 on ambient cooling

tryied 5.2 everyway but upside down with no luck

Thinking you need 5.5 to 5.7 on these chips to be competetive

run it at 4.8 using 1.408 core for 24/7 solid as a rock.

Have to say though I love this platform for a dailey runner though

Yeah I like MSI!!! I used a couple of there boards though there no world class OC'ER they are great dependable boards and there CS is great too!!
I figured I'd post my score's in vantage, for what ever reason my board is now Gimped as it will not clock as high as it once did(around5200). But just to show you how well your cards are working, here ya go

Two way Vantage 7970 CPU @4700 or so
http://www.3dmark.com/3dmv/4766699

The only way mine would go that high(when it did) was I have a strapping adjustment, had to use a higher strap125 to make it run. IT wont do it no more pretty sure its the board holding me back now.

I have no complaints, Duke sold this whole platform to me over a year ago for a really great price, as he was using it to compete in the MSI overclocking contest.

Ran for a year on gimp water at 4.5 and with the new water cooling system in the grinder can run 4.8 and get 5.1 for benching. Board is stout other then it simply will not do the advertised 2400 memory. for 24/7 I run the stix at 1904 MHz 8-9-9-22 1T

can't do those timings at 5.1 thought. but defiantly one of two things either my chip has a weak IMC or the board simply can not do it what they advertise. Never asked Duke what he was getting out of the stix

is that your max clocks on the CPU ? and if the board is effed are they sending a new one ?

pondering throwing a 4930K in this, think they are droping on 9/4/13 from what I can find

But probably will stick with the 3930K as it does everything I need to do and more, may put the money into a Hassy set up to beat on

Think I got more, not sure. I just turned up the multi this time and the volts. This board ran so good before I moved, then came the CAPS/ROM Bios update for windows 8(witch I don't have) Now it runs like shit and I'd love to teach it to fly out the damn window usually. Its just water, had it around 5200 last year.

@Kal
Should I remove half of the 16Gigs? Work better? Having all sorts of issue's with in now, it worked so well at first. Can't stand to even deal with it now!

I didn't mean for you to remove mems but in regards to that, traditionally, if you runnin 4 dimms, remove two and you should have a lil more ass end stability. In another words, less stress on the imc.
