Before shots.
The system had an 8000 BTU cooler:D but alas I have decided on more normal OCing with regular air cooling. The vid and cpu intakes will be replaced with 50% perf 16ga SS with at least one 6" fan bringing in filtered air. The back and top vents/vent are to stave off hot spots behind the mobo and in the HDD area

I will have time to finish this when I get back from the mountains. Until that time just know that I was playing Texas chainsaw massacre with the other side of the case and some 16ga 50% perf SS using a high end rotary tool until about 4 this UHHH yesterday morning. Crap cutting stainless with a rotary tool takes time. I got peed at the case door and did some hacking and slashing with the angle grinder also:)
EDIT: never use a torch or plasma on these cases as they are prone to warp:( just keep the metal almost too hot to touch (140-180*)

No as it would not be appropriate (sparks everywhere safety glasses flying through the air) However I do have a Mill to set up soon and I have full unlimited access to a CNC burning table (I built the control unit cheap so I could use it as needed) as well as some limited water jet use time as well ( I think I rebuilt that whole damn machine so if you want video I can think up some neat crap:))
EDIT: Got to get my TIG rig back up here at my shop as well then we can do some heavy metal modding.

For the sheet metal work on cheesy grade atx case steel I like to use a small reciprocating saw, if you have padded clamps to use it works really nice. Even an angle grinder will burn most of the cheap steel or beer can grade aluminum they use with cases typically.
Are you using the ducting just for a cold air setup at this point?
Archer
06-11-2009, 09:10 PM
Nope this one will be all ambient air one side of the case will be open with a filtered between 2 pcs of perf SS and fans on the inside.
Here are some shots of the carnage of yesterday morning and the tools used. I really didn't have much to worry about to a point with the warping as there is not much left of the side:

Actually all ducting is going to be used in a 100% hand made multi cooled rig. I will be sacrificing an AC, making SS cold plates for attaching to the coils and using welding coolant. Probably make my own water blocks as I have a concept for a custom setup for a decapped CPU.

I will be doing a little redesign on the front bezel, moving the optical drive down and incorporating a hydraulic cooling solution. I just need to find the right combination of coolant and tubing. Thinking about making the top vent easily removable and integrating a DI cup.

Yeah I haven't really had the time to get into this forum much but I do like it. Int the coming weeks I plan on putting a little more time into the whole forum thing as it is a form of self promotion as I may be taking the dive into a case mod-fab shop.

Getting the fab on the side plate finished up and then the paint. I have too many ideas for this rig as it will only be a play thing:) perhaps a hydraulic system for cooling a stacked TEC assembly with a couple of air cooled TEC's on the reztank and the rad mounted at the top exhaust if I need one.

Back to the topic. Velocity stack directed air cooling yes or no?
yes? whats a Velocity stack again?
Archer
07-01-2009, 08:36 AM
reducing a 6" to a 4" (a forcing cone of sorts) the flow is not changed but the velocity of the air is increased thereby allowing directed displacement of warmer air.
Kind of like playing wit power decrease Volts and Amp potential goes up (ever wonder why wire is rated by voltage?).
Kal-EL
07-01-2009, 08:38 AM
I'd go with the ever so slight compressing of the air in a reducing cone if the velocity is unchanged, when the air intermingles with the heat and expands subsequently, it should increase the rate of heat dissapation.
Just a nutterz guess :D

put shroud on HSF to capture air from 2 rear intake fan's more readily and moved internal fan to pull heat away from video card
