So whats the difference? I have been looking for a decent 120hz monitor thats reasonably priced. There are hdtv's that are 120hz that are lower in price than monitors that are 120hz. Would they perform just as well?

Input lag is the deal breaker on using TV's for monitors

I have a buddy that usesd a 55" Samsung, it does OK but I could not deal with it personally

Especially when things heat up, racing games are unplayable IMO

side note: If your monitor is not HDMI compliant/certified it will not play the newer HD content without the HDMI cert. So even if your monitor is 2560x1600 like my Apple 30" Cinema, Itunes will still tell you to go buy an HDMI compliant monitor. Horseshit I know. Even my old big screen rear projection, clear as hell, doesnt have the newere HDMI b.s. so I suck eggs at standard resolution when HD is available.

Hmm actually your old projection TV so far predates HDCP it might not been an issue. Are you using HDMI to conenct to that or component?

But back OT:

Yes monitors are better than TV screens, I use monitors FOR TV screens :) I bought an HDTV once, for my HTPC. YUCK. only 720P (was super cheap, $160 shipped I think and it must have cost 30+ to ship it back in 2004) I fixed the "non functioning audio" by reconnecting the plug in audio cable inside the chassis. lol ..

Worked fine for SD HTPC and TV duties from across the room, up close, no way. Desktop was so low res everything was pixelated.

you need to look at pixel pitch when judging. TVs have a high pixel pitch, Monitors very low. Monitors are meant to be viewed within a foot or two, and have higher pixel perfection and refresh rates as a result.

HDTVs are meant to be viewed at 10 foot away (hence the meaning of the 10' UI for media center) so resolution and refresh are not as important.

Whats the deal with 120hz anyway? Bluray is 24FPS. Cable is a compressed image, even companies that boast their 1080P quality do not push 1080P they push 1080i. (1080P resolution at 30 frames per second... then again that definition has apprently changed to, as I means interlaced, which they are not.. augh) too confusgin.

Monitors are better, they play 1080P at 60 FPS. the 120Hz and stuff only refers to ghosting, but increasing refresh with a poor Frame rate still means a poor frame rate.

EDIT: 120Hz at 30FPS means 60FPS of a normal monitor

But still don't we get better results benching on 120hz vs 60hz? And, arn't games on the pc going to look better?

Benching? No, unless you have some type of Vsync enabled. I am not sure if Vsync is 120Hz capable in any games though, might be worth looking at :) )

The 120Hz feature for HDTV is largely a marketing one, and really only refers to BluRay playback, in which the 120Hz feature benefits from an even source:display ratio (24 goes into 120 evenly). Generally speaking 120Hz is a new processor that handles some image blurring and judder fixing issues from what I understand. Not TRUE 120Hz like a LCD monitor.

Still for 120Hz TVs look up "soap opera effect" sure you have no motion lag, but films look like TV movies...

As far as 120Hz Monitors. Information is a bit more skeptical. Opinions are only valuable from blind reviews. (lol not joking) As once you know XXX monitor is better than YYY opinions just naturally get skewed towards XXX.

Unfortunately windows shopping will not help much unless the store knows how to properly calibrate each separate screen per the media source.

Considering the large price difference, I think you would be better off with a higher quality 60HZ monitor (Like an IPS). This improves picture quality and has good response times.

I would do some research though. I would go with one of those new 24" LCDs from Korea solely due to the 2400 something resolution, and the low cost which higher res will push your max FPS down to 60 or so anyway, and you would not notice the difference between 60 and 120 hz.

Response time is more important than refresh anyway :) Just watch out. Some monitors will advertise say 7ms response time, others will say 2ms. the 7ms may be better if they are talking about BWB not GTG. True response time is Black to white to black not Grey to whit to grey time which most LCDs use to get that 2ms advertising thang.

I have no personal recommendation for a monitor for you, I cant spend what I would want to on a monitor, they cost as much as my PC! lol. So therefore I try not to look. High res is most important to me, I joined the LCD game late (had 24" WS Crts :) ), so things like ghosting and such were never an issue for me.
