My Dewar broke :ohcrap:

Anyone know where I can get a new 20 liter dewar for a reasonable price

Looking for the kind with a cap that I can just pour out of, will they fill that type ?

The one I had with the valves so you don't have to tip it over to get it out broke this morning as was just trying to test the valves the head popped right off........ :Dizzy:

So I was looking to simplfy my life by just getting one that pour's out

Plus they have to be 10 fold cheaper ........ looking for new not used ... anyone know a place that is reasonable please link me up

Thanks

WD, a new 20ltr dewar goes for about a grand, give or take. I've still got that 50 up for sale.

IDK if they would fill a "just pour out of Dewar" or not. I'd call your ln2 place and ask first before i bought one. It's really not a big deal though. Thats how i get my ln2 from the 230L dewar to my bench room.

Witchy, i'd try on ebay that's where i got my from and it was a 30~32L for 120+shipping
the shipping is where got me pretty bad ($55~60)

i am pretty sure a 20L is gonna be no more then $30

Yea the only thing is I paid 300 for this and it failed ......... after one use ....

Problem is I had it for like 8 months before I used it. I just am trying to avoid getting another one that is not ready for prime time is my fear, Unfortunatly Madd's is to big for what I need...... :ohcrap: bad enough the 20L cost me 50 bucks to fill, the 50 L would be well over a 100 bucks a pop

I don't own a 230L. When i get on my delivery schedule thats what they bring me. I have a 35L and a 10L that i fill off of it. When it's empty they just come with another one and take away the empty.

I may be able to, is there a proceedure? seems like some sort of epoxy or something holding it on ??? would have to withstand some serious cold .... anybody know what they use,

Plus I have to replace the valve as that is why it broke I was trying to open it and the valve is insanly hard to turn.......

Pics or you didnt really break it.

The top neck plate broke and you can see the insulation? Or the piece that screws to the neck plate broke?

Im guessing the former. In which case.. yeah its busted. Have to fix it (welding) and then reseal the vaccum. Which uses.. guess what... nitrogen :) cheaper to buy anotehr good one.

Yeah buying "new" is pricey. I bought a 30L for like $150 shipped i think and traded it to Kal for a EVGA mobo. (which holy crap shipping a dewar to Hawaii is spensive.)

Only did it cuz LN2 was like 2 something a liter here unless I go big.

If you even consider paying $1000 for a 20L just go bigger and get cheaper LN2

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MVE-LIQUID-NITROGEN-DEWAR-230-LITERS-CRYO-GYL-5-CASTERS-/250960488836?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a6e692984

Holy crap that is in NJ I could pick that up!!

FYI: I dont buy dewars at macys so never considerd paying $1000 for a 20L in fact I have a hard time finding them at that price (EDIT: found one for $1400 new LOL)

dont limit your searches based on L size, do general searches for them you will get better results.

And fill it immediately on arrival. and test it. If it dont hold it for a long time, its busted and needs to be returned :) (I imagine smaller units are actually better at holding then larger ones )

EDIT EDIT: Im an LN2 n00b and disregard all the above :)

Will do guy's I will post pics when I get home from work,

yea it is not welded, it is sme type of sealant, Jor-ell sold it to me when he retired

just did not get around to using it until now, turns out that was a mistake.

That is why I am wondering is it a good idea to get one that just pours out, and if so would they fill one like that, I will call my local guy today and see if he has any insight, but I doubt it.

I am in the same boat Rich, $ 2.25 a liter here

Thats why I need a small one 20-25 liters or I will never be able to afford to fill it

LOL ........ if I was getting juice at $ 1.00 a liter I would be all over it Madd .......

the reality is though that at $ 2.25 a liter I simply would not be able to afford to fill that thing up. Then you have transport and weight that would also add to it being impractical for me to go with a 50 Liter

You're too used to Airgas Dewars which in my experience totally suck.

My 230's will last 2 weeks under normal use. The Airgas Dewars would gas off in less than a week.

The taylor wharton 35L do well in lasting a few weeks too, no dispenser, just cap.

There is no pressure in the dewars that you can pour out of and for our purpose the stopper actually holds the LN2 pretty good. How big is that hole in the top of the dewar? You might be able to find a stopper that would fit. Its not like you're gonna store the ln2 for weeks. The stopper on my 35L Taylor Wharton is 2 3/8" round. The hole in the dewar is 2 1/2".

Still i would check and see if they would fill this type of dewar at your place before i bought it. I really think its unlikely. Like i said before i fill these myself.

Witchdoctor

Well I hope I can get a rental this weekend, the ln2 dude is looking around for me but in my area everthing has to be brought in ..... so it is a crap shoot, but I have already planned to freeze these things this week and hell or high water that is what I am doing even if it has to be Dice .........

According to Slav, my airgas guy, if you're going to rent a dewar, rent a high pressure one instead of a low pressure one cause the low pressure ones gas off way too fast.

From experience i can tell you thats just not true. Besides, when you try and fill your thermos with a high pressure one its gonna be disastrous. I had a high pressue one delivered to me by mistake once.

well after exstensive research I have found out what brand deware I have an also found out the evac device does not connect mechanically to the dewar rather just sits on there and it is a home brew extraction device. ... so some low temp sealant and a new valve will fix my dewar on the cheap.......... :)

Delivery is cheap though, relatively...

As far as Large containers gassing off more quickly I would expect that.

If you look at the size of 20L dewar the device is much larger that the capacity dictates. teh 160L I saw at teh welding supply shop, were NOT 5-6 times larger than my 30L, more like 3-4.

I am assuming that the ratio of insulation to LN2 is much higher on the smaller units.

So if 1.5" insulation on a 20L say, with a 24" diameter, then move up to a 160L and still have 1.5" insulation on a 36" diameter... im no physics expert but would assume that the larger surface allow greater heat transfer to occur and thus would require a larger amount of insulation...

Another consideration is the large dewars require pressure to dispense LN2 since you cant just tip it...

Pressure = agitated molecules = heat. Might be better to have 3 50L dewars laying around and fill the 160L. Should hold the LN2 better and 30L was easy to pour (one hand pour with another holding my coffee mug :)) , cant see 50L being too difficult especially if you have a spout.

just gotta remember it shoot out straight at first lol (I wore a glove the first couple of times, but got it figured out after that and poured from dewar too coffee cup with no glove)

I only have had the experience of 1 full dewar I cant wait to do it again though :)
