DOMdedumdm

I have Vertex 2, under $100 for 60GB now that the vertex 3 are out. Duke is the expert and he's the one that told me never buy more than 60GB

edit: can I say that here ???

Nero plays with Intel stuff , very expensive comparably speaking. Vertex 2 for inexpensive performance

SSD's are nice. But they don't help your overclock if that what you're looking to do. They're only good for PC Mark 05.

These are really good. OCZ Vertex 3 60gb (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227737) They come with the new firmware so you won't have to flash them. $79.99 after the mail in rebate. i just bought 4 of them. They're really fast. I'm having problems with them being too fast on xp startup in pcmark 05.

It'll happen to you one day too Kiki  IT's part of the wedding ceremony, kind of like the ring, except the guests don't get to watch her cut it off and put it in a safety deposit box

The intel's are slow as dogs compared to what Duke just posted

Problem is, they're all so fast the human brain can't distinguish the difference :laughing?

oh yeah! I got that because it's reliability not for the speed....

that been said, I ain't getting married! prob gonna go adopt a few kids but AIN'T GETTING MARRIED!
I am not the sharpest tool in the box but marriage is not for everyone, just sayin

I kind of always wanted one cuz they say they make OS faster but I'm just trying to get to $500 so I get 0% for 12 months :rofl

I got $270 and wanted to see what else I wanted but didn't really need :)

Thinking of getting 2 for raid hmmmm I need to hurry for the mir :o

Intel for reliability, Samsung for reliability/speed, Crucial for speed/price/reliability, and Sandforce drives for speed. I think the M4 64GB is the best bang for buck. Got mine for $85 and it does 550MB/s read, 115MB/s write. The new Samsung 830 64GB will do about the same read with better writes, and has better reliability, though either would be reliable. The Force GT 120GB I had was great, but I dont think its worth the price difference.

With RAID you lose TRIM, so I would look for drives that have agresive garbage collection if doing RAID. The Kingston V100+ is good for that iirc.

Cecil, Long time dude :D

Don't think you lose Trim if you have a raid controller card, but, I could be wrong :P

So what's trim ? LOL

Now I'm not feeling ssd there so small that's why i wanted to raid them thinking for more speed and space so would a 120gb be better then raid ?

MaadDaawg
12-12-2011, 03:33 PM
what's RAID

What's Trim?? Trim works with S.M.A.R.T. to keep your SSD from clogging up and slowing down. Works on Win7 only :D

I'm still using a 300gb raptor + 40gb ssd for caching and its working like a charm. I don't have the need for a big ssd at the moment. Plus I don't really feel like shelling out big money for a big ssd.

Cecil

I think best way to do it is 64GB SSD for OS and small apps, then VR or RAID0 blacks for major apps and games.

DOM
12-13-2011, 05:41 PM
Right now I have 2 1.5tb in raid 0

I had like 100gb for the OS partition and it got full and idk why lol

Cuz I think it was all the updates and crap from ms

But it was more of a want then I needed a ssd so going to pass I'm a fan of hd space I got 6.5 tb right now

Nero plays with Intel stuff , very expensive comparably speaking. Vertex 2 for inexpensive performance

Neuro plays with all kinds of stuff

the 60GB rule was for SATA2 when larger drives used different NAND chips that were less resilient.

Now the difference between a 60 and a 120 or even a 240GB drive is usually performance related. Only sometimes will a mnaufacturer use different NAND modules in different desnity SSDs.

Intel/Micron stuff (they actually have a joint venture and still use micron model numbers on all their parts,, and called me an insider because I asked questions I was not supposed too so no more testing Intel SSDs I guess) is great for desktop OS NOT for benching.

For benching its all about sandforce. Definitely go SF2200 even if you are sata-2 limited.

Because on small file sizes, you will hit the limitations much sooner on SATA2 then with a dedicated SATA2 drive.

(Sound backwards, but it makes sense, you are going to maximize the interface sooner with a SATA3 drive)

Vertex3 is among teh best of the drives you can get. However in a pinch the agility 3 will get you to 90% of that performance benching and in general desktop you will not be able to tell.

Sorry been away guys trying to take care of stuff before the holidays as I am moving after them

GPU pot> SSD

SSD for benching is all about PC05, and PCV (which I think is still unranked?)

the bot has added a bunch of benchmarks though and not sure which ones are boint worthy.

And dont let the MTBF full you. I thought the same thing. 60GB will have 72TB write life. Which in the context of a 2TB HDD is only 36 complete writes. It actually boils down to almost 200GB of written data a day for 1 year. Or 40GB a day for 5 years regardless of density size. (EDIT: I don't understand that but I dont use SSD for copywaza so SSD would last me a lot longer :) )

Besides that is what buying new and RMAing is for ;)

Write life is the key though, note that READS do not hurt teh drive. only writes.

My OS install with all updates, drivers, and small apps is 14GB. A 64GB M4 is ~59GB formated, leaving ~45GB. You dont want to go under half capacity, the performance generally drops after that. Also, if you format the drive to a smaller capacity to begin with, it adds space for garbage collection, and is area of the drive that doesnt get written to on a daily basis, making the drive last longer. So for a 64GB drive, if you formatted it to be 53GB instead of 59GB, you are giving it about another 10% of space. So with 39GB left after OS/updates/drivers, you still have a bit of room for a few things here or there. (the overprovisioning is really only good for Intel/Micron/Samsung drives, not recomended for Sandforce)

I have a 64GB M4 for OS, 160GB VelociRaptor for apps, 450GB VelociRaptor for games, 4x2TB Samsung F4s for movies/shows, and a 1TB black external drive for transfers.

All the SSD I have tested include extra NAND chips for overprovisioning and/or redundancy. Dont think short stroking is necessary, in fact I would advise against it as you would then be concentrating writes on a smaller portion of the drive. So will hit dead cells faster than using the full drive. 10% does not seem like much

also windows updates in win7 unless they fixed it recenetly exponentially increases OS size on drive.

After a couple of months of use windows 7 with updates will hit about 40GB. that is 30GB of winsxs folder.

Slipstream all updates before installing to help keep this to a minimum :)

I have all Win7 updates on mine, and with install and some movie apps installed, only have 14GB used. I am using Home Premium though, Ultimate is a tad bigger. As long as you dont install all the language packages, the OS shouldnt be bigger then 16GB even for Ultimate.

All SSDs come overprovisioned, but doing more so helps the GC more.
http://thessdreview.com/ssd-guides/optimization-guides/ssd-performance-loss-and-its-solution/

Over provisioning allows more data to be moved at one time which, not only enhances GC, but also reduces write amplification to the drive. Write amplification is a bit tricky of an explanation but it is the measure of how many bytes are actually written when requiring storage of a certain number of bytes. A ratio of 1:1 would be ideal but not a reality and a typical result would be an actual size of 40kb written for a typical 4kb file. In short, maximizing over provisioning and reducing write amplification increases the performance and lifespan of the drive. Over provisioning also provides for remapping of blocks should the bad blocks be discovered during wear leveling, which unlike a hard drive, does not reduce the end user capacity of the drive. The replaced blocks simply come from the over provisioning.

Doesnt work for Sandforce drives though.

Must have been a preSP1 glitch then, just checked my current desktop (only 1 month of use) and winsxs folder is only 5GB.
