View Full Version : What's good cheap AMD to bench?
Patch

My 7 year old, bless his little heart, told my wife he wants to get me a "motherboard" for Christmas.
My wife, bless her heart, told him dad "already has one and doesn't need another".
After we had a good chuckle together, I got to thinking this might be a sign from the stars to try a little AMD benching.
I've never benched AMD. Any decent sub $50 AMD boards I can steer them towards that would help the team? (newegg or ebay-style - I'd have to be way too involved for a second hand forums purchase)
Something for which I could easily find cheap buckets of chips.

I know the ones i looked at were 200 or more. But as benchers we need the whole 9 yards. You know and i know that cheap and good almost never work together.

I'm talking old tech for hardware bointage.
Ok, doesn't have to be good. Just old and cheap. Think ebay.

939 boards go pretty cheap these days and tons of chips on that platform that are heavy hardware hiiters

Cool, thanks.
Socket 939 looks like what I'm talking about. This is more about making my little guy glow a bit on Christmas morning than it is about hardcore benching. I can ebay a few CPU's ahead of time so I can say, "Perfect! I have these processors but haven't had a board to put them in!". Then we can prep and bench together during the break.
Any 939 suggestions with pcie slots? Or with both AGP and PCIE?

For AM2+ AM3 benching, most boards will be fine.
for overclocking nonBE chips you need a AM2/DDR2 board to really push past 50% OC. Biostar has cheap boards that will do it, Gigabyte has some too.
790FX to 990FX I found limited to about 300-315 HTREF clock something like the sempron 140/145 will do that on stock cooler though :)
