How to: Bench MSI Lightning GTX-580 for dummies
Everyone has their own way to do things but this is what has worked for me. This is how I bench heaven...
1.Cool to -50c idle in windows
2.Glaze your pot
3.Start benching at stock speed and volts except memory bump +175v ish
4.Slowly cool down pot while benching to -135c (if you hear a loud crack start over and heat back up to -50c.)
5.While at -135c you can set temps and volts while idling in OS 1450/1400 = +449mv Core +200mv Mem +000mv AUX
6.Pull down pot to -150c and start bench..you want to hit -160c by end of loading screen.
7.Slowly pull down to -180c during the first 2 or 3 subtest in heaven and just splash the pot enough to keep it there, do not fill up the pot (thats when I get cracking I believe)
8.Lighten up on your pouring for Test 25-26, let it warm back up to -170c by the end of 26.
9.Once the test is finished do not do anything until you pull back up to -140c or you will freeze when opening GPUZ (you want to be back around -140c anyway so you can apply clocks again for your next run)
***Dont apply clocks with temps colder then -145c***
***Dont Open GPUZ with temps colder then -145c***
-Device lost error = more vGPU or more Cold
-Test 20 freezing = more vGPU
-TIM is very important ;)
-No secrets/
Its seems a function of OCP is occuring at 1470/1400, causes voltage to drop to 0.300vGPU and will stay that way till power is cut at PSU.

Hey Bro -
Thanks for the tips and pics. As soon as I finish the BEAST review I'm gonna start putting this info to use :D
Printing as I type :clapping:
Dude, dumb ass question here - are these temps the CPU or GPU ???
hey, at least this time you didn't call me a stubborn geezer

Awesome share Splave, that insulation job looks exquisite though not as much as Vivi, :P

I thought its of the Monitor, thats what displays GPUz and clocks right???

but what about all the little switches on the back of the card?

but what about all the little switches on the back of the card?
all of them ON
my switch explanation
The Mem v, GUP v and PLL v all add a little votls. +0.050 if I remember right
OCP switches moves the ocp limit from (I think) 300a to about 500a
PWM - you can adjust the frequency from 260Mhz to 310Mhz
cold bug helps with cold boot issues, off CBB was about -80 for me on is about -140
I have always had both on ( the switch is upside down compared to the others)

To play safe - ALL of them (as in both switches on each block?)

Allen, preparing to insulate my lightning, just wanted to check, does it need memory/vreg sinks????? Coz I dont see any on yours, also, would some1 be kind enuf to link me to the cold slow bios for lightning.......
Apart from the OCP mod, does it require any other mod???

Bro,
Splave told me he cut the base of the HSF and used that to cover the VRs, that's why you don't see any heat sinks. Memory is kept cold enough by the eraser (cover the mem chips) and the LN2 pot.
Also, you don't need the go slow bios flash because you set the card for LN2 and voltage with the switches on the back. Set ALL switches to on, then follow Splave's guide.
I'm going to run mine later today, if you want to look at the heatsinks I used check the thread I posted called "WWJD".
Splavious, if you read this, please check my pics and let me know if the other chips need sinks. I put sinks on all chips your plate covers (I believe)

Ok, today I got around to opening the lightning, and it seems my pot can easily fit even with the memory/vreg/whole card sink installed. Should I go around and insulate the card around it or should I remove it and insulate it like any other card???
Cannot cut the sink, since would be looking to sell the card once I am done with it. Please suggest.
Edit : A second look at Splave's pics tells me, he is using the same base sink as well.

^ yes but I cut it, anytime i have left the whole plate on there like say lighting 275 Ive had condensation issues
Thanks dude :D
