Having trouble partitioning please help

I'm using partition logic and I cannot seem to get 4 equal sized partitions. It partitions, but not the size I want after the 1st partition is created.

Trying to get this ironed out before next week when the SSD gets here.

I guess they don't have to, but would be nice if they were all fairly equal. I get the 1st one set to ~12GB and then when I set the 2nd one to the same amount of clusters it ends up being twice as big as I want. I want 3 for OS's and 1 waza.

I wish I could give better answers, maybe just try while installing windows.

should be able to slice and dice it any way you want in windows set up

diskpart works good for dos and if you already have XP on, use this...

only 32bit is freeware so has to be used with XP for set up then your good to go

No I don't, but when I create them with the same amount of clusters each one seems to get progressively larger.

Never tried creating multiple partitions in setup before I guess that would be easy enough.

Use Vista DVD to partition. It creates the correct offset for aligned partitions.
Important on HDDs it is even more important on SSDs

You can also use a non ultimate windows 7 DVD to create partitions too. If you use ultimate (or Pro I think) it will force you to add the 100/200MB partition for EFS, it is unneccesary and a pain to get rid of later so just use Vista.

I didn't even get Vista yet, although I made a partition for it. I made the 4 x 14GB partitions with xp setup. Good size or too big?

And they are misalligned you say? I figured that would be the case, but it's ok this is just a test. :)

Install OSes based on age. XP first, server 2K3 second Vista 3rd and 7 fourth.


If you have a windows 7 PC up and running, you can install the drive as an external (or internal) and format that way. That will provide the proper alignment without installing the EFS partition.

If you do not have Vista, you can find the Vista recovery disk online its a small Download that can be booted from a USB stick. I do not recall if you will have GUI formatting available but you can boot to command prompt and run diskpart.

Hmmm...the 4th partition was for Wazza. I didn't know I needed 2K3 also.

EDIT: what benches are Vista for, and 2K3 as well?

I"m pretty sure 05 is Vista and anything pi is 2003, pifast, superpi 1m 32m. You can't go terribly wrong in xp tho.

Im@geshack images have just recently been banned here at oca because it often times gets hijacked by trojan downloaders. Kikis tutorial needs to be re-uploaded.

Just use tinyxp for now, taiserver just happens to be the fastest os for super PI 32m right now. A great many overclockers have tested all forms of xp and found an anomoly with taiserver in which its a little faster than the rest.

The dvd's are not a waste, hold onto them forever and install as needed for your current goals. We just need to adjust the tutorial images for yah. KIKI!

I'll install Lite, Tiny, 2K3 (english for now), Vista, and Tiny7 so I can test them all out. ;) I have a 60GB SSD on the way....I gotta figure out the best way to break it up. I guess 10GB@ and the rest for Wazza. Sound good?

Yah, sounds good, not sure if Vista will let you get away with it, been a while since I've played Vista. 30gb for the others and 15 for vista = 45 and change for whatever.

I don't see how to make the partitions on the 2nd drive while in my Windows 7 disk management screen? Neuromancer was saying that I could make all the partitions and have them be properly aligned. Help please.:blush:

be careful when fuddling around in the disk management, meaning, make sure you are manipulating the drive you intend on manipulating.

Having said that, when you look at the disk manager, you'll see:

Volumes at the top and disk 0,1,2,3,4,5 etc on the bottom. In my screenshot, disk 0 is actually my backup drive and not an operating system drive. Disk 1 is my Raid/OS drive. On that drive I have 3 partitions (1 small partition in the front aka 7 ultimate standard). The two latter partitions are my WIN7 32 and 64 bit partitions. At the back of that drive is UNALLOCATED DISK SPACE.

Simply right click and select "new simple volume" and then decide how big that partition will be during the following prompts.

O.k. so you have a disk# that doesnt have any partitions on it. YOu may have to initially right click the disk# and initialize it. More than likely it will already say "UNNALLOCATED DISK SPACE" in black, just right click there and select new simple volume.

Lemme know if this helps or if I've just missed what your asking for.

I got that far, but after I have created the 1st "new simple volume" I can't make another one. Maybe I'm just being dense.

EDIT: I was just being stupid as usual......trying to create another new volume in the one I just made instead of in the unallocated space. :blush:

Now is this absolutely critical in order for them to all work?

I installed Lite 1st, then 7 on the 4th partition and it was working fine...boot to either one. But then I installed server2003 enterprise edition, and I can no longer boot to 7.

2K3 is a pain and I can't get it set up.....I can't use my DVD for some reason it tells me "hardware monitor driver failed to load" . I can explore the DVD but can't run it while in 2K3.

I can't get VGA drivers to work on it either.

If using ATI vga, check that you have .net framework installed.
Yes, its critical to install the os in order of release, xp32,xp64,server2003, vista32,vista64, server2008, window732, windows764. oldest to newest will keep the boot loader functioning. Else you will need to play with bcdedit, or a bootloader app, the names slip my mind atm.

You might wanna just give it another install oldest to newest.

Actually, you can install the operating systems in any order. There's just less hassle if you install from oldest to newest.

I use a program called EasyBCD, and what it does is restore the Master Boot Record, or MBR, after an older OS overwrite it.

I don't mind re-installing, I just needed to know that would fix it.
