Cant' wait to see how this turns out. Did you get you a dice pot yet?

Not yet... I'll be tied up with air then water before I get to dice, besides.... gotta buy this stuff a bit at a time.

WHAT THE BLEEP!!! Man I am jealous. 955BE, 4870x2!!! Can't wait for this. we needed some AMD love around here and I am still a good 2-3 months away from it.
Jeffro64
05-03-2009, 07:54 AM
LOL... Well this is just a stepping stone until I go to the i7 975. It will take a lot out of this system before i'll be able to call it AMD love as i've never been a big AMD fan myself.... but we'll see! I don't think it will come close to what you have in that 920 but ya just never know. I am a little excited though. :D
DrNip
05-03-2009, 08:23 AM
Your going to have fun with that system I guarantee it. Get the hang of the overclock then get a pot and DICE the hell out of it.

05-03-2009, 08:29 AM
I do plan on doing just that. :D

Out of curiousity: why the triple channel ram kit? I saw some good kits of low voltage 2x2gb DDR3 in the 1600mhz range on newegg.
Jeffro64
05-03-2009, 10:57 AM
Just so i'll have something to start with when I move to i7. I've also got some 2x2gb corsair 1600 lying around here to play with.

Jeffro isn't one of those newbie young bucks that impluse buy, he's planning this thing out like an old pro :dj:

05-04-2009, 12:56 AM
LOL... I guess the bug bit me good!
This project may be very short lived though.... Been reading a few reviews i'm not too happy with about this chip. Most say they can't get it stable even at 3.8ghz... and I have yet to find an after market CPU cooler for it.
Kal-EL
05-04-2009, 04:47 AM
Well, just put it under DICE or LN2 and see what happens then?
I still got an extra DICE pot I could lend yah for a bit ;)

If you are looking for an AM3 cooler you might have a problem but an AM2, AM2+ or 940 cooler should fit. As for nOObs reporting that all they can get is 3.8....Remember also that comparing ghz when referring to intel/AMD you are wasting your time. The architecture is so different between them that it really is a nonsense comparison.
Jeffro64
05-05-2009, 05:59 AM
I did see the Zalman 9900 will work with the AM3 but I wasn't impressed at all with the 9700 on my 9650. As for the reviews on the chip they were socalled pro reviews you know like TPU, Toms hardware which I take with a grain of salt anyways LOL... and a few others but the chip was just getting smoked by the 9550 and the i7 920. Hell... even the x4 940 was kickin it's ass in some things LOL.
But if anyone finds some good reviews on it, i'm still looking... It would sure make me feel a lot better because it's too late now to cancel the orders. But one thing i'm not worried about are the two 4870 x2 cards.... think i'm gonna like them. :D

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003
That should fit just fine, if the 955 you get is consistently beaten by a 940 than you can shuck out another $200 for a 940 and move on. It's not like an intel where a pair of EE cpu's will set you back $2500 or more...
Jeffro64
05-05-2009, 12:08 PM
This is true my friend! I was also looking at the Thermalright TRUE Black 120 as it also seems like it might fit.

Still gotta get a PSU and a good cooler before I can put her together though. Needless to say there will ne overnight shipping involved.
hellcamino
05-07-2009, 11:11 AM
You can certainly put it together for testing with the stock cooler, get to it Jeff!
Jeffro64
05-07-2009, 11:14 AM
Well... I do have a Corsair TX750 PSU lying around, that might power it with one 4870 x2 on the board. :D
Jeffro64
05-09-2009, 05:07 PM
Hmmm.... This might just be fun. I just put it together real quick and installed XP x86 just to test things out and make sure all the hardware is ok...still gotta test out the other 4870 x2 but everything else is fine!
I went ahead and installed 3DMark 01 for shits and giggles and with no OC and one 4870 x2 I already bested my score vs my QX9770 @ 4050ghz with 3 GTX280s!! That score was 57848 compaired to 54343! :D

WOW.... The bios is totally different than what i'm used too, not sure what to do in there. I mean I see some things that are familiar but when you go to change something it has all these different settings but nowhere I saw what setting it's on before changing it...so not sure what to set anything to LOL.

Break out the Scientific Notepad and start logging default settings. Also, read that darn manual for proper cmos reset procedures in case it gets borked.
Jeffro64
05-09-2009, 09:42 PM
Scientific Notepad??? WTF...LOL, remember i'm new at this LMAO. I alredy read up on how to reset the cmos so i'm good on that bro! :D
This bios is greek to me though...gonna take awhile for that and how to really OC this thing. Might have to get a couple of you guy's on vent!
Jeffro64
05-11-2009, 02:49 AM
Well, I took her to 3.7ghz last night just messing with the multi. Didn't have time to mess with any other settings but I'm thinking its gonna be hard to get it past that on air going by what I experienced and what the reviews I've read say, but we'll see.
I hope to have some time tonight to play with it and mess with some more of the settings...might need some help with that lol. Real temp doesn't support the CPU and Core temp only sees it as a single CPU so don't really have a good temp to go by.... Core temp is saying 38-41c at stock settings so I really need to find a better cooler for sure.
See y'all after work!

I like using Everest Ultimate, it provides alot of detailed system info including temps, gpu/cpu/mobo etc. There's some free versions floating around and a demo version. Personally, I pay for it and like it as I move it from machine to machine and use it on all machines.
Do us a favor and run some baseline benchmarks at the clocks you've got so far. thx ;)

I'm fixing to put the other 4870 x2 in after I take the other one out and make sure it works. After that i'm gonna try out my XP disc I made with nLite and see if it works and i'll start doing the base line benches.

Jeff, crank out some wprime, superPI and hexus PI for points ;) . They are all cpu based benchmarks and might bump you up some points. Besides, I'm curious how the cpu will fair :D
Jeffro64
05-12-2009, 12:54 AM
I'm working on it bro.... I did some wprime runs an so far it's down right embarrassing. I mean even at 3.7 we're talking high 11's.:o

That's actually better than you think! 2d benches have always been the province of intel and then intel dual cores. The place that chip obviously shines is on the 3d benches.

I hope the heat problem is the only thing keeping it from 4ghz and beyond. It has to be that and learning the tons of other bios settings cause i've seen LN2 runs @ 6ghz.

Better cooling should definitely help. Those PHII scale insane mad with colder temps. Much better scaling on the cold side compared to intel. I bet if that cooler works like it should then you'll be able to hit around 4~4.2ghz. Have you tried AMD Overdrive too? That's actually a windows based OC utility that's worthy of using.

I haven't yet...been playing around in the bios today and no matter what I do I can't get above 3.7ghz. I even tried playing around with some of the other settings in there that I have no idea about what they do and nothing. Playing around with those kinda showed me what they do but still not really sure.

That's the way I learned. I used to read and read and read only to learn the most from trial and error. Just keep very good notes so you will know what settings seemed to help stability. Besides 3.7 isn't bad with the stock heatsink :rofl

That's not too bad for stock scores. See if you can't select a different ram divider and get that ram to atleast 800mhz but keep the same timings. You should really be able to run ~800mhz @ 7-6-6-18 or 6-6-6-18 or even better like 7-6-5-15 with some extra vdimm :D

I'll try that... the setting it was at in those runs is what the bios set it at from the beginning. That ram is my old Corsair ram that is supposed to run at 9-9-9-24 so it might do it. I think the voltage was at 1.5 in those runs so it will handle more.
But it my bios there are like 4 more numbers after those and i'm not sure what to set those on at the timings you suggested.

Seems like I had more before what it was at the beggining of these runs, does it take away points after awhile if you don't submit for a long time?
Kal-EL
05-16-2009, 05:41 PM
Global points deminish faster than Hardware points. Hardware points are "fastest in hardware" so usually they stay pretty consistant unless other are sumbitting faster scores with that specific hardware.

OK... Got it to the same settings @ 800mhz, didn't make much of a difference at all. I went from 12.172 - 12.14 on wPrime, and the weird thing is CPUz and the mhz that wPrime shows look to be different... Heres a screenshot.
Jeffro64
05-17-2009, 07:38 AM
BTW... The timings are set to what's below if that helps.
TCL - 7
TRCD - 7
TRP - 7
TRAS - 20
TRTP - 4
TRC - 27
TWR - 8
TRRD - 4
And it is set on 1T, which is what the default bios setting had all of these at when it was set at the lower Mhz.

That's not a bad gain with only changing the ram. Remember that you didn't play with the cpu mhz. Now I'm not the best ram clocker but I just play around with those advanced timings until I'm unstable and then either pump up more vdimm or relax the timings just a little. I usually test with super pi 1m. It's short, fast and will be slower if you are too tight on timings.

For right now just leave those alone. Get your cpu/nb freq/ram/timings/OS etc. down and then you'll tweak those last for those couple milliseconds or 50 points on a bench of your choice.

I gotta say though it isn't as good as I thought it would be...the temps still get over 50c when taking the volts up, but I am sitting at 3.8ghz right now and that wasn't possible before. I hit 3.9 but it wasn't stable at all and temps were hitting almost 70c.
Kal-EL
05-22-2009, 08:01 AM
Jeff, did some digging around and it looks like 1.55v @ 3.8ghz thru 4.1ghz are the average speeds done on just air with a max temp of around 73c. FYI

Don't worry bro. Sometimes futuremark is sloooow validating drivers. It's all good and not needed for hwbot.

I'm getting there....Still having trouble with SuperPi 32M, I thought I had it figured out earlier but it started doing it again. Thought it was the ram so I switched to the Kingston....same problem. So I brought up Prime 95 and it was stopping in less than a minute into the blend test.... seems that mine likes a little more volts to the NB and SB. Put those back up a bit and took the CPU to 3.5Ghz and ran Prime for a little over 2 hours while watching a movie. Got SuperPi 32M going now and it looks like i'll finish slightly behind your score.
Yup... here it is.

I see you swapped out the ram there! That made a pretty decent difference huh? Is your ram stable at that speed and timing? If you really like that wallpaper I can email it to you.
I'm bound and determined to get this turd perfectly stable at stock with the nb and ht link clocked at max prior to raising the cpu multi, I may have finally got it too!

Yup...ram is stable it seems, ran prime blend for over 2 hours and was able to do that SuperPi 32M. Heres a 3dm06 @3.5Ghz for you. Yeah....if you don't mind send me that wallpaper bud.

Slowly getting more out of this thing, I was in windows at over 4.3ghz but couldn't get it validated before the BSOD....I missed it by about a millisecond. Jeff you should be able to kick some ass with your better ram!

Good job!
Yeah, soon as I get home I hope to have some time to play with it some more and see if I can get more out of it than I did with the other ram. This ram seems to be a lot better... and hopefully i'll be able to put that other drive in with Vista for some dual 4870 X2 action!

Surprisingly good after reading about all these high temps that others have had with their i7's. High 30's to low 40's idle and about 74c is the highest I've seen while stability testing at 4.410ghz with ambient at about 70f/22c.

Hang in there Jeff, we've all been there. You just need a bit of cooling to coax the best from it.

Should have been able to get more out of it with the WC'ing stuff I just got.... temps went down far enough but still nothing. I'm starting to think it's the board cause I know the chip will do much more and has on different boards.
I can still play with Vista and the other 4870 x2 on it though. :D

All it needs is some TLC instead of force feeding Jeff. nVidia board w/ 775 socket= cheap hooker that you tell to take it and like it, AM3 = fussy bitch that hasn't learned just how much she likes it...yet. i7 = fussy virgin that fears the tube steak and must be convinced that it's ok first. All things considered I think the LGA775 socket was by far the easiest ever to overclock.

Yeah.... I'm still not against getting a E8500 and a board and playing with that also.

It's too late Jeff. You have been corrupted. Don't fight it. The only solution now is to keep buying hardware. Without it, you will never be happy. Cooling, well you are turning quick. Soon you will be thinking about a chiller. Then you may or may not decide to skip that step. Why? Because you realize there is an evolution to the overclocker with the end result always being colder temps. Next step is considering a phase changer, but no. That isn't cold enough for Jeff. He wants one of those crazy looking liquid nitrogen evaporators. Yeah, that should do it.
There buddy, I just layed out your future. The path you take is your choice, but you will end up in the same place ;)
