4th of July weekend Hondacity and I benched the new GTX 480 on Liquid Nitrogen:

System configuration:

Motherboard: ASUS Rampage III Extreme
Processor: Intel Core i7-980x Extreme Edition 6 core 12 Thread LGA 1366 CPU
RAM: Corsair Dominator GTX4 2533MHz DDR3 Tripple Channel kit
Graphics: ASUS Nvidia GTX 480
Hard Drive: OCZ SSD SATA 2 Solid state storage drive
Power Supply: Antec 1200W TPQ

The 980X CPU was good for about 5.4GHz in 3D Benchmarks and Multi Threaded 3D CPU Tests
our Gulftown Performed better on 2D single threaded Benchmarks with about 5.9GHz max
CPU was cooled down to -196C holding -180C Full load showing no signs of a CB "Cold Bug" (After CB Mod)
The CBB "Cold Bug Boot" was -141C

A much better CPU sample is needed for record breaking, I rate this sample 6 out of 10 for LN2 overclocking

The ASUS GTX 480 was exciting to bench on LN2, we all know how hot they get on air!
The card maxed out at 1088Mhz Core with 1.25v
The onboard DDR5 managed to remain stable up to 1100MHz
The GPU had a CB of -128C and a CBB of -60c

Capacitors were added to the card for enhanced voltage stability under load. Fermi pulls a lot of current!

This GPU is only held back by the OVP "Over Voltage Protection" and the OCP "Over Current Protection"
Once the card is modified to remove these limitations Core clocks of 1300Mhz can be achieved under Liquid Nitrogen Cooling.

twas awesome doing it..... even on air *videocard

backpain held me back..it was awesome benching 480sss

travis is all out friendly as usual....

wooot i just got back 8pm....4hr drive

Man, I had a lot of fun!

I managed to break 408K in AM3 but failed to get a SS due to an error window popup

too bad we had crappy cpu's

980x would not break 5.5 in vantage or 06.......

Wprime 1024 at 5.4GHz....

OVP and OCP mod for the 480 was a total FAIL..... down one card

I am going to set up the M3E and a 655K for some 2D loving, maybe 01 and Aquamark w/ the 480

*needs to mortgage the house to start binning 980's!!!!!!

not 980s....

990x!!!! es ......

ocp mod was right...im thinking the card was wet....bake it for a day or two

did you knock those 3 resistors off for the OCP? killed my card doing that

Hondacity
07-06-2010, 11:13 AM
yeah we did... v2-v3 killed another card :D

he didn't unsolder it...he used fine nippers :D

should have worked though either way unless traces got cut around the board

Hondacity

we shoulda tested the card before removing the resistors...i'm thinking it got wet...so hopefully baking it helps...

i dont think the traces got damage...the lone resistor was ok....the adjacent resistor removal was the tricky part...

Solder points tested ok, traces not broken around the 3 resistors....

I will strip the card, solder the 3 resistors back on and give her a try on stock air!

lol j/k i knew that bro. I see you guys used that stupid little fan that comes with the R3. I stopped using that thing cause it would frost up so bad that it would stop turning. lmao

GFDuke

ouch. I hate when that happens.

Hondacity

we just connected it...we used 2 80 nmb supplementary fans...temps were finger safe..as it didn't burn our fingers as compared to the passive heatsink...

I'm going back to water cooling the nb/sb. It seemed to help out alot on my last R3. could be my imagination though. But hell, i paid alot for that waterblock i might as well use it.

EPIC LOL :)

ya he has that rare disease like Michael Jackson but from Asian to white :)

Mobo went from burning hot to warm when we added the lil NB fan

don't put the resistors back...

steponz removed the 3 and his card is working

recheck the cap...

Looks like some fun times you guys.

What is it about LN2 and a bunch of hardware? Same sort of feeling I used to get picking up a keg on the way to the beach........

nope just make sure the LN2 gas is not being sucked directly into it.
