View Full Version : Sudden Issues when benching

Guys,

I tried for a Super PI bench session today and for an unknown apparent reason i started off at 4545 MHz, as I get closer to 4.6 GHz runs start getting slower and eventually crash. Windows starts to get sluggish, the mouse stutters as it moves and then crashes and I get sometimes a "FF" on the LCD of the board. My best super pi previously was at 4734 Mhz so I know the CPU has more left in it for super pi. I noticed that the other day when I ran some 3dmarks I had an issue at close to 4.6 GHz too that's why I ran them lower at 4529 MHz. This all really started since I installed XP 32 bit, previously it was Windows 7 64 Bit.

If i was to reinstall or change the OS and the issue is not solved, what do you guys think it can be? Something degrading/failing, or just for some apparent reason a need of tweaking???

Can you put your bios settings up so we can take a look?

CP - When the mouse stutters, is it like Yosimite Sam or more of a Mel Tillis? :D

MCH strap to 1600 for sure. :)

When it starts to stutter like that, try upping the pcie mhz a couple notches till it stops. I think you should be safe up to 108, 110 pciemhz. Tell me if it helps at all.

Maybe run RealTemp in the background to rule temp problems out?

Done for tonight guys, but i'll give this a go tomorrow for sure and post back, thanks. :toast:

@kal
I did try up to 104 MHz, that didn't seem to help the problem. What seemed like it helped was raising my ICH voltage up another notch, but still had slow runs and some stuttering.

I have, temps are in the 40's (celsius), plus the lcd display on the board says ambient temps. The hottest core is always about 15ºc above what the display says. I.E. Display says 50ºc, core is at max 65ºc. That's how I keep an eye on my temps when a temp. monitoring program is closed.

with default bios settings, same results?

no, it's only as I'm getting close to the 4.6 GHz mark, but I have ran super pi at over 4.7 GHz with same exact hardware without issues. All these issues started with the XP install :( Maybe it's bad or it just doesn't like 32 bit for some reason?

You have Tiny XP ver9? If not, I have it in the ftp.

VTT is a little low. 758 board is default at 1.1v. Try a couple more maybe +150/175

Only thing I can dig up on a 920...

I just have a regular install of Windows XP 32 bit

I was running about 1.32v in windows. Is that still too low?

maybe a little low, up that PCI-E though. On water my RIIIe does the same thing when pushing bclk. PCI-E to 108-110 should solve it (still safe imo)

NB voltage looks a litle low to me too.... crank the IOH to 1.35 or 1.4. That should help you push a little more. Vtt and pci-e are the usual suspects in the system flaking at high clocks.

Don't be afraid to push the VTT on the 920 to +200 - +250. Heat is a major side effect though. On my 920, the system runs like ass over 4.5 ghz unless the vtt is set to +250. Any thing less or more gives me the red-ass.... gotta find the sweet spot.

So more vtt and IOH. I'll give that a shot later tonight. Thanks guys. Cooling is not really an issue, 4.6 GHz Htt on max is about 77-78. Everything runs cool to the touch on the board, got fans cooling everything.

i used 115 mhz on the pci-e to get past 220 on my 920

Thing is when I ran stable for benching at 4734 in super pi it was only at 102 :(. Why acting up now?

Splave

its a funny thing but upping pci-e is like upping the cap on your max clocks with those chips. when you need it you usually need a good bit of it :)

Chicken Patty

I remember not knowing about this and struggling to hit 4.5 GHz. Does make a big difference! How about in 3d benching?

FACE

pci-e can make miles of difference in 3d, especially aquamark3.

With nVidia cards, the higher the better.

With ATI cards, you gotta find the sweet spot. Not hitting the right pci-e w/ ati will screw the run big time.

Guess I got something to play around with then :D

youll know your pci freq limit really fast lol....expect data corruption..

if you have ssd they're easier to work with pcie benching...

These settings have gotten everything you see on the bot. Maybe something is degrading or something decided it was going to be a bitch to me with a new install of Windows. Not sure, but i need to figure it out!

Ok here we go:

Tried CPU VTT up to 225mv
Tried IOH up to 1.375v
PCI-E up to 106 MHz
still same thing once getting close to 4.6 GHz. I opened Eleet and upped each voltage little by little to no effect. What do you guys think? I'm really starting to think it's windows.

I might give Xp lite a try, the one up on the FTP server. If I remember correctly I saw it there. I'm aiming at some 2d scores now so I think Xp would be the way to go right?

What about rev10?
Or microXP that comes with it?
Haven't used it yet, but installed it as my daily last week, anyone done any testing?

MicroXP got even less stuff than TinyXP, no idea if its any good for benching though, might try it this weekend if my stuff arrives in time.

Well, am using rev10 as daily, very nice
And am benching atm with expieriences mircoXP, an even smaller installation
Seem ok so far, but I dunno, don't have enough expierience to compare really :/
