View Full Version : RAM market.....

Why is the memory market so crappy lately? Tri-channel kits are scarce. Good ones are even worse. There is only one IC that's worth buying, but it cost waaay more than "regular" IC's. The selections out there suck, the timings suck, and the prices suck the most. Something seems screwed up here.
I remember when I got in the overclocking game buying things like memory was fun. There was a big supply of manufacturers and kits. You could search the forums and find a relatively cheap kit with good IC's; if you order quick enough to get in on that batch. When I had the REX, drnip located some good clocking D9JNL IC's on generic crucial $25 sticks. They clocked like mad till I degraded them.
Now it seems like you got crappy (for benching) PSC, micron, BBSE IC's with all manufacturer. Plus they are still crazy expensive. The other option is well..... Corsair with their ass fisting prices for guaranteed IC's. OCZ, Kingston, and Gskill gave up on selling Elpida Hyper ram, and Mushkin is releasing very very small quanities of them when they are in stock.
Am I just a total sour puss or do you guys feel the same way about the memory market? We got new mobo's, VGA's, PSU's and at the same time less and less good memory to buy.

yes the ram market is stupid expensive, and the only modules that clock well at good timings cost more for one stick than a full kit of another
But I did save a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO
**DISCLAIMER** I did not and have not purchased auto insurance through GEICO, I in no way can claim weather or not you will save money on auto insurance, and I would not believe that australian batard of a gecko either.... i think they pay him to say it.

:laughing: You crack me up man. I remember when DDR2 D9's were "obsolete" you managed to get lucky with a kick ass set of Patriot with D9 that just clocked to retarded speeds. That doesn't happen any more.

i think Elpida kinda trounced micron on this one, and Micron is trying to gain foothold at this point.

Yah they were for sure caught off guard with the Hyper IC's. I think they really thought they were still gonna own i7 with s775 era IC's.

I wanna see your favorites folder on your browser. :ohcrap: How many sites to you keep track of during a week.
So one article says prices are being artificially being fixed and companies are having process issues much like TSMC. The other article says that the stupid server market is buying all of our memory and causing shortages. Damnit OCGMJ, quit upgrading the servers to DDR3 already.

I've wasted a small fortune over the last 6 months chasing quality RAM.
Mushkin, Cellshock, G-skill, Supertalent, Kingston flavors of crap, ho-hum, and just OK.
Finally broke down and paid $400 for some Dom GT's. Now I'm happy. But my wallet still won't talk to me.

This is what I was saying the other day. No new RAM coming out or at least for the triple channel peeps out there and prices have sky rocketed too it seems every since that Elpida problem.
Those budget Crucial's were the shat weren't they. $25 too!

Sorry guys... no sympathy here
When I first started building rigs ram was going for somewhere in the neighborhood of $90 for 1MB SIMMs. that was for 120 nanosecond, if you wanted the good stuff - the 80 nanosecond, the cost went up to about $130 per 1MB SIMM.
Extrapolate that out now to DDR3 or 5 and what we're paying for memory is dirt cheap :D
20MB HDD - $400.
I could go on and on.... but I won't ;)

Edit: Sorry for the poor sense of humor. Sometimes I forget that Marine humor doesn't always work in the real world. Honestly I can't afford the top of the line Corsair's. Plus I think the premium is rediculous for the name. Good memory, crappy price.

I think ram companies are just starting to realize we are paying for 1.2k chips, 550 for graphics, 300 for psus and now mobos are hitting 700? They want more money now too!
I paid $600 for 3x2 cmgtx2, they are now $750 and out of stock. They were worth every penny. In aq3, sp32m, pf and 05 they are totally worth it :D
It was nice buying ddr2-667 cas 5 ballistix with d9 and clocking to 1200+ though, you are totally right

Yah the days of buying super clocking budget kits are gone I'm afraid. Companies have caught on.

I have the 1600mhz 6-7-6-18 Ascents. BBSE, do 2000 CAS7 all day long at 1.74v. Will do 1900mhz at 6-8-6-24 1.65v as well. Very versatile sticks but they were pretty expensive when I bought them so I'm glad they do what they do.
