View Full Version : ASUS Rampage Extreme III testing thread

So the new hyped ASUS board is in my hands and I figured its time for a thread where we can share our experiences with it. First of all I have to say that I'm not too impressed with the quality of this board. Reading around the internet I found a few sources which were indicating that the placement of the TIM on the X58 and the southbridge were terrible. Well I took the sink off today and this is what came into the light. I thought the days of using this NOOB gluey gum are over. I guess not. :Dizzy: Also one of the screws was not screwed all the way in on the southbridge causing bad contact which you can see in the pics. Another thing is the X58 part of the sink. It looks like there is 3 threaded holes in the sink but only 2 screws were holding it in place. Can someone with this board check on this for me. I replaced the TIM and mounted a WC block. This is it for now. My new ram will be here on Friday so the initial testing follows during the weekend.
Also the more I have been inspecting the including accessories the more I think this is a used board which was sold as new to by me the Egg. Accessory bags taped closed with regular office tape is not exactly stock. WTF Egg?

Mine looked new. My lightning sure didn't.
Guess I should have removed the sink before prepping, but I got lazy and really need to get to benching. Temps so far are great on "NB" and SB. Off to flash Fermi BIOS and play with ROG connect (now that I figured out I wasn't pressing the damn connect button next to to the connector......).

Just using a dell studio laptop with the USB ROG connect. I don't really trust blue tooth to work well during razor's edge overclocking. Basically, it's evbot without having to meander through the menu. The post string also beats trying to decipher LCD codes. One thing inferior to evbot is that it locks you out during post/boot so you can't do on the fly tweaks to get you into Windows.
Alright. ROG connect works and thanks to Shannon I can give my 480 almost 1.4v.
Time to start prepping for cold. :D

You guys will notice that what you set in ROG connect sticks to your bios the next boot so if you where going for 6.2ghz superpi run and you bsod when you restart you will be booting at 6.2ghz so if you fail to boot thats why, gotta tone it down during post like honda said, delayed startup ftw.

What should I be looking on these settings:
- Dram Freq.
- UCLK Freq.
- QPI Link Data Rate
- CPU Differential Amplitude
- CPU Clock Skew
- IOH Clock Skew

Thanks!

First dumb question: how do I get the ROG connect working on my notebook?
What I did:
- installed Rog connect bundled software on my vista32 notebook;
- connected usb cable from notebook to usb rog connect port on the rampage;
- enabled rog connect on the bios.
All I get from the notebook is this:

Nope, clock skew is just what it says. You add a delay with the skew. I haven't tried it on the classy, but it worked wonders clocking the Rampage Extreme. Goddamnit I miss that board.

In the REXiii same settings running 3d fine with 6 cores would give me BSOD on Windows load screen just because I used enable 2 cores only. Would like others with the board to check into that.

I was unstable disabling cores on the 762. I haven't tried on the RIIIE yet.
I played with skews some on 762 and it never seemed to make much difference. Just the 100-300 range. Got no scaling so stopped trying. Haven't tried on R3E yet, but Bloodrage did much better with 200-300 on both CPU and IOH skew when high baseclocking with i7 920..

on the core i5 -670.....
at first i only used 2 cores....because using 1 core..would bsod....
i patiently tried lower blcks and lower voltages...and then cranking everything up inside windows....using evbot ofcourse :D

can do super pi @ 6.7ghz but very low efficiency as compared to my golden i5-670...

First Ln2 test last night: -100cbb 980x... You will need a torch for this mobo because when it's in cbb mode the volts won't warm up the chip like the Classified (p55).
That Asus Cold Boot Bug button that is next to the 8pin pwr connectors is useless, anyone tried it? It just restarts and gives you same cold boot 'cpu init hang'...

Patch
05-11-2010, 06:27 AM
My experience has been the opposite, Jor.
My P55 Classy couldn't keep a chip colder than -120ish (tried 3 chips and re-did the CB mod X3).
R3E so far has gone down to -150 to -160 range on the same chip that my 762 bugged at -115. That "CBB" button isn't a life saver, but it has helped me. If I hit it fast enough it will sometimes boot in situations where I'd normally have to torch it.

Better? idk. I've only owned the 759 and it's a super tough guy. To be honest it's the best board i've ever owned. Not to many 759's can keep up with it. It's hard to say at this point if this board is better. I totally wanted to trash it when i first got it. It was total confusion. But i will say it feels stable as hell now that i've been tutored by Al on it. After some more benching i'll be able to answer that question better.

Ok gotta start talking Asus here. I had a cpu-z of 6685mhz this am. But after i did the save validation file it bs'd on me and even though it did save the validation it won't submit. Running 35X 191 and I was at 1.87 vcore, 1.56 qpi (vtt in EVGA terms), PCIe was at 106, i had the cpu pll at 1.92 and i was running the ram and uncore real low to avoid any problems there. Ram voltage was 1.68. I can achieve this speed pretty much anytime i want but for some reason it just crashes when i try to save the validation file. It sounds to me like there is some little bump i need somewhere but i just can't figure out what it is. And i'm getting a litte annoyed. Any ideas? I've tried to bump the vcore but its still the same and more QPI (vtt) dosn't seem to help either. Am i running my VTT to high? Would more pcie help and how much more?
I've even dropped down to 6650mhz but i get the same problem.
Bench temps are at around -130 to -140
I'm on my Splaver bios settings.

Thx for posting this Dukester, RE3 boot up is emminant here.
Speaking losely cuz I've had 3 dewars filled with fail sauce, upping pce/mhz would relieve the slow mouse action when pushing blck on the 762 board (failure x2 now) so maybe it might help stability? pinch vdimm too, can't hurt till around 1.8vdimm me thinks.

3) Try benching with internet access and submit your validation instead of saving it. On Cedar Mills I could always directly submit higher CPUz's than I could save to a hard drive.

Note - Uncore setting will now scale with BCLK settings when set to Auto. Manual settings will be required when running BCLKs over 220 to ensure stability and improved BCLK rates.
Note - LN2 Modes might need to be adjusted to improve cold clocking capabilities. Auto = LN2 mode 2, setting to LN2 Mode 1 will result in potentially better overclocking below -140C. This is dependent upon CPU quality and cooling.

Not true, not true. When we use maxmem we are limiting the amount of memory windows can use. There was some discussion about densities on DDR3 and 2GB just seems to be the sweet spot just like 1GB was for DDR2. I'm no memory expert though and only understood a sliver of that conversation. What I do know is that 12gb is gonna give you poop timings and mhz vs running 6GB due to IMC stress. If what you said was true about volume of memory XP 32-bit and 2003 server 32-bit wouldn't be the choice for super pi. ;)
So I can't really try the dual channel (cb/cbb trick) then if I want to go after spi32m...
You can, but you are gonna loose some efficiency. From some very very limited dual channel testing I found that you loose ~400-800k pp (I think these #'s are right.) going from triple to dual channel. That is with the same exact uncore though. One other reason to go dual channel, or give it a try atleast, is to take some stress off the IMC and let the uncore run loose. You may be able to gain several 100mhz by dropping a channel which could make up for the lost performance product and then some. Look at Gutterz's i7 960 runs. Those were all in dual channel. He just made up for it with tweaking and retarded uncore speeds. :clapping:

Do you have any links explaining ram ref volts? I have yet to find anything, but honestly haven't searched too much (yet). It's just that I've never seen it mentioned anywhere before. I was about to ask about this since the option is there on the UD6 and was wondering for a good starting point.

You pick the timings, OS, tweaks, and all the random mhz's. I'll run 6GB and you run 12GB. It will be within margin of error I'm betting. That is if you pick a mhz and timings that you can run with all the dimm slots populated. This would make more since if we were arguing about 3x4GB vs 3x2Gb that are super bin IC's. Care to explain more about the cpu memory addressing vs windows? I just don't see how the CPU can/will address more than windows says to once you are in the operating system?

is the high vdimm the trick to push the cb? or push the imc to work better?
i know someone doing 1.5vtt with 2vdimm but didn't help much...
sofos1990
07-07-2010, 07:57 AM
depends the cpu
I was trying to bench 1M at 6050 but always failed so I decided to push vtt and vdimm . I set vtt at 1.55V and vdimm at 1.91V . Cpu scaled well at least I could run 1M at 6020 so I pushed the voltages a little more ( 1.68vtt and 2.2 vdimm ) but no change . There is a weird situation with Gulftowns and 1M that's why I was pushing the voltages .
Dunno if it's the trick to push the cb at lower temps cause my chip was cb-free but with dual channel, triple channel for me was the same . Though many guys push vtt and vdimm to avoid cb with triple channel dunno if it really helps.

Thanks, i will try and PM him about a template.i can boot at 237 on this chip with the rex3 with slowmode but it kills any 3d benches or gaming.
board acts weird with 3 bloomfield chips, anything above 215 boot in slow motion, text on bios screen posts really slow and the windows load screen does the same. cpuz takes 1 minute to open and also is like slomotion to open. very unstable.

4760ish was max stable no ht, 4620 was max stable with ht enabled but with heavy ac on the rad, but ran it at 4500. wanted to run some 3d at higher mhz for a game, BC2 to try and get my fps up. my 5870's are not working well in bf2 so i am using gtx260's and with smoke/fog and snow in certain spots my fps take a big hit. im sure the chips at its limit, had hoped to be able to get a little higher on this board, but maybe it is better geared towards gulftown.
I have put the chip back in the ud7 to make sure it wasnt the chip going bad but it runs like a champ at the same settings. was even able to lower vcore a couple notches with some tweaking. i just installed the 960, so bclk wont ba an issue but this chip just didnt clock as well as the 920. maybe i am asking to much of these chips but worth a shot.

Updated 07/13/2010 -
Rampage III Extreme
BIOS 0860
1. Added additional memory enhancements
2. Enable official support for ROG Expander Board
3. Improved 3D performance at stock settings
http://www.mediafire.com/file/gi2zr0...-ASUS-0860.rar (http://www.mediafire.com/file/gi2zr0zynmj/RampageIII-Extreme-ASUS-0860.rar)
BETA BIOS 9124
1. Added 2D SpeedBooster option for GulfTown owners
2. Enable proper memory table reporting in 3rd party applications
3. Improved 3D performance
4. Tweaked LN2 Mode settings
http://www.mediafire.com/file/zjm3md...-ASUS-9124.rar (http://www.mediafire.com/file/zjm3mdnzjwn/RampageIII-Extreme-ASUS-9124.rar)
Note - 2D SpeedBooster option is for non-3D applications like SuperPI, WPrime, and other programs that benefit from enabling CPUMicroCode ignore flags in the BIOS. Enabling this option will improve 2D application scores but will decrease 3D performance. We highly suggest disabling this feature for any 3D applications or benchmarking.
Note - This BIOS is still in Beta state and is released for those needing additional performance in 2D applications. We will have a final qualified version with improved memory and 3D performance shortly.
Beta BIOS Releases in Validation Testing as of 7/12/2010-
Maximus III Extreme (Audio, Memory)
P6T series (980x, Microcode, Memory)
P6T6 WS Revolution (Microcode)
P6X58D Premium (Microcode, Memory)
P7P55 series (enhancements)
P7H55 series (enhancements)
If your board is not on the list, it does not mean we are not looking at improvements, just that we have not reached beta release and validation test process.
Thats some interesting stuff!

Hey. I got this RE3.
But I'm really confused with many of the settings on the board, could you gyts help me out a bit? I've only been on phonix bios in my i7 carrier. Mostly EVGA.
Could you tell me what kind of safe voltages I could stay in on air/water and ln2. And what they mean, cause they're different than my EVGA bios settings.
CPU Voltage: no explanation needed
CPU PLL Voltage: What voltage is this, and what will it help my OC for?
QPI/DRAM Core Voltage: I'm very unsure what kind of voltage I could use on this one. Same as CPU VTT in Evga bios?
DRAM Bus Voltage: 1.65 for stock Vdim probably?
IOH=NB voltage, stay around 1.2 -1.3v?
IOH PCIE voltage = nu clue :S
ICH= South Bridge voltage. if I bump this voltage what benefits will I get?
ICH PCIE?
And there is a setting about T-Balance and X-power, Xpower is probably for clockaholics speeds?:D
And what BIOS Should I use for a W3520, 1005?
Best Regards Mr.rusty overclocker.com :)

i say keep it to 1.4v or something...for air... for 45nm..
Neuromancer
09-23-2010, 01:32 PM
I always set IOH to 1.4v
IOH PCIE I think = IOH ICH I/O on most other boards... = 1.6- 1.65v for better 3D stability.
I use the same voltages for air/water or DIce...
(R3F, E759, E758, Asrock Extreme, Foxconn Bloodrage... am I missing one???)
only volts i mess with are the v-core and qpi/dram and set the others to stock which should be the lowest setting but the pll goes lower so idk if it helps much havent had time to play with it
but benched 3dm06 on water at 4.6ghz
but going to try to hook up the ss tomorrow idk why i even got this mb XD LOL when i could bench my 980 @ 5.25-5ghz on the ss on my other asus mb
