View Full Version : My first SS unit incoming!!!!!
I went through Sdumper. Really nice guy. I wanted a strong unit and he said he would build one.
Confirmed today -40c at 300w. Should be here by the weekend or Monday.
Here are a few pics of the build. frost = fun

gpu mounts all set? :D
I'll mod if i have to. I plan on using this as a way to keep the shakes off.... somebody has come down with a frost addiction. When I do grab some Dice or soon ln2, I will be strapping this to the gpu's. I already have the extra eraser and looking for sinks now.... :ohcrap:

Congrats ... who is the builder or are you doing it your self
Yea ... they are da bomb for 3D ..... insta cold ...........
I use mine for 2D as well, but even Dice gets colder but awsome for settin up baslines to conserve DIce or Ln2
one day I will have a CPU pot ...
:toast:
I guess it is about time we got caught up! I might even go retro on some s775 after all is done and my gpu's are modded and dead. :ohcrap:

A good heavy cpu pot is worth the investment. F1 EE is king in my book... It drops temps fast, and holds them well.

Yeah he is a great guy! He modified mu Mach GT II and also built Splaves soon to be mine cascade. He also drove all the way from GA to NY to tune it after they snapped on of the copper lines while carrying this thing up the stairs. This is what I call commitment.

Any that need a temp guage the one pictured above cost $35 on ebay they work good I myself have one. If you dont have the coin for a UEI.
Yeah, I'm inline for a second temp unit.... since I plan to use this on gpu's when I am using the pot on the cpu.
What about those $25 units you guys were looking at? Are they worth their salt?

I got one just recently and its working just fine although I didn't run it yet on both channels simultaneously. This is where most units get into trouble.
I have the 7100 for the pot.. the only reason I'd need both channels is because of multi gpu's... which means more pots
During cpu testing, I'll wire in the 7100.

I say we start negotiating. I say 32m cause it's my favorite. You pick one or two more. 2D or 3D
We can stick to 2d since neither one of us are beasting gpu's right now.
32m... I knew you'd say that. we can brutalize our chips with wprime 1024 as well. I'm down to bench whatever. :D
i dunno if the ss can handle 1024 @ 5+ghz though. Are we having a clock limit, or is it "run what ya' brung"

I doubt you are going to see 5ghz on wprime. We can run whatever. Lets just keep it simple and limit the benches so it's easy to declare a winner. Loser has to refer to the winner as daddy and call themselves daddy's bitch.

Best of three sounds good. I hate wprime so the first two make it an even battle. What do you want for the third? Vantage CPU test or maybe 06 CPU test? I'm not sure about clock limits. That's not why we bought these :D

I like your idea witchy... problem with that is my chip is a low volter. She likes to bathe in cold too.
I like the avatar idea too. Sounds like a plan. We should have someone create good avy's for the winner and the loser.
hmmmm.... a 3dmark cpu test would be a good tie breaker. It doesn't matter to me which one we use... they both raise my DIce temps the same, so I imagine about the same diff's with ss.

Ordered the temp reader from suntek. $25 and an extra probe. Thinking about it now I should have bought another 7100 so I could mount it... :leghump:

OM-effing-G...... UPS is playing with my emotions. At first, quantum view was telling me the 2nd (today), then through black magic went back in time and rescheduled it the day before original scheduling to a delivery date of the 5th.
Now it is saying the box is in the Louisville hub now. Typically that means I will have it tomorrow. Something tells me that it will sit at the hub all weekend and I will have it Monday... :argh::poopinghorse::doublefinger:

Hi mate congrats on your unit! I remember my first Cryo-Z I did a lot of damage back then.
It's normal the differences in temps, it really depends on the ambient temps too, my SS would display higher temps on the evap when it was COLD here and displayed lower temps when it was WARM. But it would hold the same load no mater what.

Probably the algorithim used on your temp measuring device. I believe some (to save money) just program in a 68F default and calculate the differnce in resistance on the probe itself and get your temp that way. A dual probe is good because you can setup one probe for ambient and calculate T1-T2 delta and see if it is actually running colder/warmer than it reports.
Well thats my theory anyway LOL

It's a little heavy for that... but what the hell, might even lay the sausage on it...
When i fire it up it's kinda making a noise once it gets to -38. It's coming from the compressor. I have no clue what it is. Maybe I'm messing with it too much too soon?

What kind of noise? Ticking noise or a buzz?

My A/C units hold -30 in resi but if my room temp goes up cause of the heat that it puts out. It will be -25. So I always got cooler air via window fan blowing on the HX an it helps.
Ok, so how dumb would it be to blast cold air across the condenser and compressor? Still though, it was tuned much colder than what I was getting. I'm going to let it sit over night and see what the morning brings.... If it gets worse, then I have a leak... if it gets better, than I was just impatient...

All seems well this morning.... flipped her on and she jumped to -30 in seconds. After that a minute to -40. These are unloaded temps, but they are "mounted" temps. When the chip is running at 4.8 i see maybe (MAYBE) a +1 degree change.

Yeah I was too. It still makes that noise every once in a while, but I think it is from the temp difference at the top of the compressor.... I'm sure it is normal, and with never having a 3/4 hp compressor next to the desk before I'm sure to see and hear a few new things...

That is a sign of flood back, liquid referigent getting into the compressor. If that is to bad it can damage the comp. or shorten its life.
If it happens while no load is on the unit, and only a little then its not to bad. But if its still doing it while a heavy load is on thats bad and shows it is very over charged.
Does this unit have an accumulator on it ?
I wil have to look back at some pic's to see if you show it.
Ok I see now, it does have one installed.
A accumulator is designed to catch liquid refrigerent in the suction line before it gets to the comp. You should be getting no flood back at all with one of these.
this makes sense... did your compressor get really hot? mine starting to cook, and the coil coming from the condenser as well....
Coming from GA to KY might be the problem... elevation difference maybe?
Splave
04-06-2010, 09:29 AM
something to take into account as well for sure
Yeah compressor was pretty hot if I recall, had to add a fan to the backside (was in a smaller encolsed case though so that did help the situation)

Compressor that get super hot are out of tune and working very hard. Its like sitting in a car with your foot on the gas and reving it up. While a well tuned car traveling down the freeway just cruses along just fine.
What makes them do this ? To much pressure or operating in a vaccum which is prolly the case. This is done at times to get much better load handling but at the cost of reduced life span of the comp.
All comps get hot, that is not a problem, but super hot means its running in a vaccum, I think anyway.
My SS from Jinu and Kals 2 stager, never make flood back noises and make almost no noise while running. Kals 2 stage comp does get warm and a fan on it is all it needs. Its nothing to worry about tho as its in temp range. But the loudest thing on his 2 stager is the first stage fan on the condensor. Metal fan blades tend to make more noise.
Hmmm... might need to bleed it a little then and see what happens.... If that doesn't work... I'll have it leak tested.
Running in a vacuum does what? How is that corrected, at least enough to get this thing running better?

Yeah I'm thinking so too. I should be getting a call soon in order to have my hand held through the procedure.... I feel like such a noob when it comes to this stuff. I was able to convert to sub-zero pot-style fairly easy....
On the plus side of things, the evap on the window unit isn't freezing up as bad, so that evens out...
Talked to Sdumper, and things are looking up... probe contact was a little off, and if the temps do not improve after it's redone then I'll bleed it for a second or two.... super nice guy....

That is what I suspect, over charged.
The problem is if you vent out any gas, which is bad to do without a reclaiming tank, and you take out to much you are SOL unless you have all the equipment to add back in gas.
Some other things that are looked at is Super Heat and pressure numbers.
Gas turns to liquid in the condensor, that happens because of temp and pressure. Its all a balancing act.
Its just imo but I think people get over concerned about unloaded temps, its more about how it handles under load.
Cold unloaded temps looks good, but that generally means it wont handle loads as well, revers is true also.
So what is needed is a good load tester to get the tune right, then slamp it on a CPU and see how it handles a live heat source to get things nailed down.
i also want to add that I am in no way trying to slam this unit or sdumper with any comments I have made.
I would suggest contacting scott and seeing what he says as he built the unit.
One thing I have learned is there are many different ways to do these things. I have also heard so many different stories about cap tube length, how to tune etc and many people do things different.
So just contact scott and see what he says first :)
Thanks Bill. So far so good.... idle Temps are at -41 and load is expected to stay around -38 to -40 with the probe mounted better.
I might just take the long way around bleeding it and touch the valve for 1/2 second and test until I hit the balance of superpi and wprime temps... :D
This way I will not have to worry about letting too much out.
Just as I type that, I realize that I left the insulation pulled back from the compressor end of the suction line... DOH.... I'll have to let it warm up and tape her up again... looks like gpu testing is taking a back seat for today. Unless I miraculously hit the magic load temps in a few hours.... :Dizzy:

Dude .... talk to Scott .. he built the thing before you do anything you are going to regret ...
Period
Like, the end
he should be able to tell you what the skinny is.
My guess is he charged it dead on balls in different temps than what you are at
This is just a guess and please talk to the builder before taking any action
Good luck bro ... don't sweat it man it will be right on soon enough and you will be benchin along

Sounds good man, gald you talked to scott :)
Things are different every where you go with these units, temps wise.
Example: Kals 2 stage cascade hit -111.7 here at my place, teh exact same unit with no changes what so ever at Kals place hit -106. Its because of pressure changes where he lives at and does not reflect anything other than that.
I am sure Scott did a fibe job of tunning it where he lives at, but at your place it might be a little over charged.
My last post was after talking to Scott.... Everything is cool... Even cooler once it's tuned right... He put me at ease, and didn't even laugh at my noob questions...

Yes he is.. Really cool guy.
Ok. I tested with the 920 @ 4.8ghz to be on the safe side....
Idle temps (desktop/bios) it sits at -41
Loaded w/ a wprime1024 load she rises to -37
This is after 2hrs of fresh os installs. After I powered the pc off temps immediately fell to -42.
I want to move the probe again. the closer I can get it to where the cpu/head meet the better right?
I guess I needed to be patient... the compressor didn't get as hot as did before, and it didn't seem to have as much flood back with a better load put on it... Looks like this unit and I will get along just fine, since I would rather bench at 5+ghz anyway. I will test that tomorrow. :)
