Well times are changing around here for bill and I have decided that the MonstaCade will be taking a ride accross the sea to a little island nut case so he could abuse the machine and what ever else he decides to freeze.

The problem here is, or one of them, every single Intel board that I have cold bugs on this beast. I have tried 750, 2x 860's, 870, and now 975XE... none will boot any colder than ~60c.

I just spent the afternoon getting everything all prepped up with a 975XE and kick on the Cascade to find out it will not boot, again :(

Not sure if its these Gigabyte boards that need cold bug mods, I know the P55 boards have one out but I have not tried them yet.

Plus at home here the wife had been out of work well over 8 months, finally getting a really sweet job making good jack but its no good for the mortage company. I am also here at home taking care of o'l Mom and I am not able to get out and work, might have to do something about that also that I really don't want to do. So we may be having to look for a new place here soon :(

Kal and I had been working with a builder to have a 2 stage cascade that has gone south, for a long time now with no sight to the end of it.

But I must honer my comments and do the best that I can for that deal to come to an end in the best way possible. Kal is a great guy and I think its in the best interest for all that I ship the cascade to him. I will handle the jack fruit builder :morpheus:

So as of monday I will be I will be looking for a shipper to have this packaged up for a nice safe trip to the islands.

So good luck and have fun Kal :)

No luck will be needed. This is going to be crated by the pro's.

Shipping box will be constructed to fit. Cascade will be raised and bolted down so the wheels are off the floor, then rigged in place so it will not move.

Next it will be shrink wrapped and then covered by this Blue Heat Sealed Wrap.
Then crate walls will go up and the insides will be fully packed with padded foam inserts.

Kal promissed he would photo the full unpacking <hint, hint> Kal ;)

Yes I did, those are for P55 boards if I am not mistaken, I can use those as well.

But the one for my outdated X58 Rev 1.0 board which is up to Rev 1.6 now is really a pain, at least for me.

OMFG don't get me started on GB boards...

And earlier yeah.. I was saying that 100 pounds is the breaking point on shipping from UPS/Fedex to going freight and having it cost a lot. Past 100 pounds shipping weight there is no reason NOT to add 20 pounds of packaging...

(I ship A LOT of stuff so packaging weight always has to be considered if it don't fit in a flat rate box :) (I tried doing "Flat rate" shipping for stuff I sell on forums... and man its always you California guys that buy it up and Fuchs me on shipping, when its something heavy..)

I ma glad though this transaction is taking place though.. despite the shipping charges.. Must be damn hard to build a monstacade on a tiny little island that is so out there they made a TV series about it called "LOST"

Well considering that you don't run it 24/7 and really for only a few hours at a time I don't think that it should be to bad.

The biggest consideration I would think for someone looking at running one of these puppies is how well your home is wired. Startups draw a big load so you might have to run an extension cord to a different wall socket.

I am pretty lucky here where I live and ran the Cascade on one socket, while I still had another SS Phase, my main rig and the benching rig plus a bunch of other stuff with no problems. This means I should be good to go for a 3 stager LOL.

The house I lived in before and grew up in is much older and could not have done this with out getting new lines wired in.

Other considerations is noise, this unit is not bad at all while running, it is some what loud but not nearly as bad as some others I have heard. Rottary compressers are way to loud for me, plus its a higher pitched sound, I could not handle one of those for very long. My family is pretty understanding about all this and never complained one bit while i ran the unit.

Last is heat output. I have a rather large room I bench in so it was not a problem at all, I never did notice any real heat coming out of the unit while benching. Now my Jinu SS Phase when installed on my main rig was not only noisy but had a lot of heat coming out if it.

Running in a smaller room you might notice the heat and noise more tho.

Condensation was never an issue for me, it never frooze over or had ice forming anywhere. I am lucky where I live :)

Kal will notice that I wrap the Evap enclosure with a layer of Armaflex becuase when I first ran the Jinu SS Phase on the main rig it would for water dops around the enclosure so one layer of tape fixed all that. I don't know how bad it is where Kal lives but he may need to put another layer on. Good prep work is key to get a nice tight seal.

I do it just like this for everything.
http://www.overclockaholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1690

This unit has been a real pleasure to run and it will be missed a great deal :(
Now I have to get moving and build another :ohcrap:

Yeah running LN2 can be very costly :(

Its like taking $150 and watching it go up in fog everything I fill my Dewar.
I went crazy there for awhile and had LN2 running like tap water here, but it just becomes to costly after awhile.

Going AMD at max temps is the worst at cost tho :(

Yes it might be true but the problem is you always need a cold bug free CPU which in Intel world is pretty had to get. I never in my life had on which could take a fully filled up LN2 pot. The beauty of LN2 is that you can regulate the temps. Phase is full force and relax.

Well many clarks and gulfies can be run lower than -150, and that bodes well for LN2'ers. Phase for me will be used to do the pretesting and tweaking, then Ill bring it all together for the final runs on LN2

Buckeye

Well many clarks and gulfies can be run lower than -150, and that bodes well for LN2'ers. Phase for me will be used to do the pretesting and tweaking, then Ill bring it all together for the final runs on LN2

And thats where SS Phase really shines, in pretesting and ease of use. That was the same thing I found with the Cascade with chips that could run on it.

LN2 has the ability to dial in a temp and keep it so it handles the load, thats something that Phase and Cascade have a hard time with at times.

But SS Phase, Cascade and LN2 are tools and if you pick the right tool for the job you will get good results. The same thing goes for LN2 pots.

Now a days the costs of LN2 seems to be getting rather steep, for me anyway. All the pots, Dewars, LN2 itself, then to say nothing about the time frame you have to use it in, then dealing with condensation and prep work.

A Cascade does its job by being able to use it with just about no time spent on planning the runs, running out and filling the Dewar which in some places is not easy to get. Condensation is not a real issue and being able to filp a few switches and let the machine start up and away you go. Other issues such as can your place handle the power demand of a Cascade, the noise and heat outputs of some units can simply be to much, who wants to sit next to a screaming machine for a few hours.

But a well made Cascade is a thing of beauty and a joy to work with. One this is based on rotary compressors that has a poor tune and keeped running at max speeds can really be a pain to use.

I think of it like this, a well tuned Cascade is like a car driving down the freeway with a nice steady power output and designed to run in that range, its a pleasure to use. A poorly tuned rotary compressor setup is like sitting in netural with your foot pressed down on the gas and the motor revs like crazy. Makes a lot of noise and shortens the life of the compressors. They do use rotarys in window AC units which do not make near the amount of noise, because they are tunned correctly.

btw the Goose has shipped and on its way, tho it has to go around the world a few times. Really the crew is paddling as fast as they can LOL

Nice looking set up supes ....

You may want to get the sides of the unit some more breating room ...

with two compressors running this are going to get hot

or duct that AC unit to the intake of the condensor so the condensor fan dumps out some cooler air across the componets.

Or you could cut a hole in top and fire a fan down to push that AC air across the unit as well

Kal-EL
03-28-2010, 12:32 AM
I'd love to compare some results, but first, I gotta hit home depot in the a.m. for some industrial sized extension cords. My 15amp breaker keeps tripping when loading into windows.

Turned off everything in the room except the cascade and the bench rig.........

So far the results are:

She'll run wprime 32m @ 5.2ghz @ 1.72 vCore if boot up at -102c and launched before -96c in windows. If left to idle, she'll drop all the way down to -66c.

She'll idle @ -94.5c in windows xp @ 5050mhz @ 1.62vCore and pass all benchmarks including wprime 1024m but will drop down to -88c during test.

At stock clocks and voltage, she'll cool down to aroun -102c after a while in the os.

So, in summary, it appears that under Gulftown, this cascade is only capable of reliable runs in teh area of 5050 thru 5100mhz.

Incidentally, cpu score in 3d06 @ 5050mhz is 11080 ish.

Buckeye
03-28-2010, 06:01 AM
Yeah I think Gulftown might be pushing this unit pretty hard compared to what it was built for. 1.7vocre :ohcrap:

Before a test let it sit for a min and watch 1out temps, let it come back as low as it will go before starting the run. That is the key to load handling, let the Cascade come back to normal temps/pressures before starting test.

That is probably why he is getting extension cords to run to another circuit ;)

It'll help guard against melting the cords and its needed to move the cascade off of the office circuit. Do not use ext. cords for psu's btw, not a good thing.

My a/c air unit runs off a seperate breaker via extension cords and that cord gets pretty darn hot during operation as its your run of the mill ext. cord.

Go check your breaker, its prolly a 20a while mine is a 15a and running all sortsa crap in my office. The cascade runs fine off ONE wall socket, just wanna move it off the office circuit.

Word.. having a second PC running while benching is essential.

The hard part in starting any of these Cascades is not running, but starting them up, huge draw of power when you kick those bad boys on.

I very well might have 20amp fuses, I will have to look. I know my old house would not have been able to run the Cascade, some pretty old wiring inside that old house.

why can't i use my AWG12 extensions? i bet these cables are better that whats in my walls. also active PFC compensates for the losses.

also you can't change your breaker to 20A if they were originally 15A..if you have weak cables in the walls...you'll heat those up easily. breakers are there to limit the current draw out of them.

Kal - Lose that 100' extension cord and get one (12ga.) just long enough to reach a 20 amp plug in another room...I use a 15' extension cord for mine and run it from a 20 amp circuit down the hallway.

If electrical codes are anything like here, you should have 20 amp circuits powering your kitchen, dining room and bath plugs. A good hair dryer pulls in excess of 1500 watts. The washer circuit is also an excellent choice if within reach.

Kal,
Is the first stage having issues starting or re-starting. When I was wiring AC system the minimum off time for any compressor was 6 minutes between starts. This should be the minimum off time but 10 to 15 minutes would be better. This prevents trying to start under a high head pressure.

The other item would be voltage drop on the circuit. On a 120v 1phase 15 amp circuit with 14 gauge wiring the maximum legnth to the cascade should be less than 75'. This puts the voltage at the cascade assuming an 8A load at 3% voltage loss. If you already have less than 120v at the outlet it would be more than 3%. 3% is the maximum voltage drop you would want on a circuit.
