KRYPTO
Many know his name, although few have seen his face.
Into the darkness, he emerges victorious,
The light shines brightly, do not let the dark entrap you,
From the darkest moment, shines the brightest light.
Looks of a man, yet powers from beyond,
The darkness hides the light,
but from within the darkness is where the light truly shines.
It's all about what is held inside!

Case - Coolermaster Cosmos 1000
I am entered in the coolermaster 2009 case mod competition!!
http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/microsite/mod_contest09/index.php
At least that is where it began it's life. It was led to my hands with just a small vision, a small vision that will hopefully turn into a huge piece of art!
Follow the worklog below, but here are the final pictures!

At least that is where it began it's life. It was led to my hands with just a small vision, a small vision that will hopefully turn into a huge piece of art! (emphasis on HUGE! lol)

So let us begin:
The majority of these mods were to improve an already awesome case. It has been the greatest pleasure to work on, and I thoroughly enjoy this case. These mods were to improve functionality, and cosmetic appearance. While maintaining an overall theme, that will all be revealed in the end.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05486.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05486.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05488.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05488.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05489.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05489.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05490.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05490.jpg)
Then I quickly got to work ripping out the front hard drive cage:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05495.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05495.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05494.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05494.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05493.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05493.jpg)
Then the reason for ripping that out, was to IMPROVE airflow!
What does that best well yes of course a couple front fans!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05508.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05508.jpg)

and some sanding on the main frame, for prep and paint later.
More pictures in the next few posts.
Enjoy!
Ok next step was to get to cutting out my Window mod to show off all that fancy new hardware!
Let the cutting begin!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05874.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05874.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05875.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05875.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05876.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05876.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05877.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05877.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05878.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05878.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05884.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05884.jpg)
You can see the first cut was rough, but right where I wanted it, after some sanding to get everything nice and smooth she look pretty again!
Next was to mod the inner trim, so that it would hold a piece of plexiglass nicely in place! Then cutting the plexiglass to fit in snug!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05864.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05864.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05865.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05865.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05870.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05870.jpg)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/th_DSC05871.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/CoolerMaster%20Cosmos/?action=view¤t=DSC05871.jpg)
Once I got to this point, I realized that to get everything fitted as nice as I want it, and to give the inner look I am going for I needed to take it one step further.
Yes this one is a little crazy but all will be revealed in the end. :bounce: :bounce:
The cutting and the aftermath!

Paint
In the last couple pictures in the previous post, you can see some beginnings of some priming of the case.
Now for some shots of the frame painted Satin Black, and some of the prepping and finalizing of the exterior pieces.

Here are some initial shots, and the mess my garage was in, also just moved. Had to organize the garage last night in order to be able to complete everything.

Hopefully will be back later with some final coat shots, and some other pictures!
UPDATE 8-26-09
Ok few new pictures, got the supports for the motherboard tray in, and the hard drive mount made, so the hard drive will be vented underneath to keep it cool, and slide out the front for easy cable removal and hard drive swapping if necessary. Also got the front of the case modded, and that will get mounted up later.
Will be sanding down the frame, and final painting hopefully finishing up today. Enjoy!

UPDATE 8/29/09
Well I was unhappy with the paint on the chassis, so before final painting, I sand blasted most of the paint back off, and then sanded areas that needed it back down to the metal. Alot of areas where the filler primer was applied were only sanded flat, not down to bare metal, as to try and achieve the best possible finish.
Enjoy the pictures!

I also finished the end caps for the front of the case, to finish off the area where the door would have once been installed. This way the airflow through the front fans is never restricted by the door, but the front of the case appears finished and not missing something.
NOW I'M Happy with the paint!!!
Enjoy the pictures, picking up some more hardware and finishing the painting up tomorrow!!

UPDATE 8/31/09
Ok have a few new paint shots, all the parts are painted. I have reconfigured how I am going to mount my harddrive, so that has been changed. That update will come as the main work on the case gets finished up and I get into the electrical work.
Here are a couple paint shots, more will come later!

Polishing/Lapping
UPDATE 8/29/09
Our first signs of some polishing work.
I have started lapping the heatsink for my CPU, but l et's get started with the case work first!
These are the rails, that make the feet, and top handles on the Cosmos. They were originally painted silver, until I nicely sanded them down to bare, aluminum, yes aluminum
After the first sanding with 220, then 400 then 600 then 800 then 1000 then 1500. Then hit with a very fine steel wool and some polishing compound, we get a nice mirrored finish, that will later be final buffed for a very high gloss.

UPDATE 8/31/09
Ok guys, have all four bars sanded down, and 2 of them with some initialy polishing done. So here are a couple shots for your enjoyment!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/th_DSC02007.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/?action=view¤t=DSC02007.jpg)

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/th_DSC02009.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/?action=view¤t=DSC02009.jpg)

Through the polishing process, I started with 220grit on my mouse sander to knock off all the paint. Then I grabbed the following grits, 220, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and wet sanded until the previous grits scratches were gone.
Then I hit it with a buffing wheel, and some black oxide polishing compound. I need to do some further polishing, and final polishing still but the above gives you a general idea.

Electrical/Fans/Lighting
UPDATE 8-26-09
Ok what will control everything in the Case as far as fans go will be my Lamptron FC-2
Why did I buy a silver one and not a black one, well I got a good deal on it, and it was exactly what I wanted to get the look I wanted!
Plus it let me take it apart!

I love painting coolermaster cases, nice work on the feet too. Should look real sharp against the back.
Polish though might be hard to keep going, have you thought about using a clear coat?
When I was in the Navy, we had to have our fire stations nice and shiny. Some divisions painted the brass nozzles with clear coat. Completely eliminated oxidation. (I did not however as getting out on deck in the sun was a great way to get off watch :) )

On a Navy boat, this would be necessary because the brass would be exposed to the elements, however on a computer case not necessary, that aluminum will not tarnish, unless I leave it outside in the rain... Which I will try and make it a habit not to do . ;) Thanks for the comments! :good:

Black does look better than the silver. You might back off the 38mm fans on your TRUE and maybe opt for some 25mm as the 38mm are little too much for it in that case. These fans I have listed below are nice, quite and push 110 CFM of air.

Also might look into painting the fan clips. Looks great so far though.

thanks buddy! I actually like the 38mm I like the size :-) I may look into some quiet fans down the road but I wanna see how this setup runs first.
Great idea on the fan clips, I'm just not sure if they would chip too easily??

Well I am just speaking from experience on the fans. I have two like that on mine but never turn them past halfway as it gets too loud not to mention halfway gets the job done.
They prolly will a bit but get em painted, get em mounted then do your touch up with like a model paint brush.

Well the time has arrived, for those watching the reveal will be today, some final shots after I take them in the next couple days!
She is alive, she is running, and I have impressed myself. Normally at this point I see things I could change, things I could have done better, but this time I see a completed project! :good::good::good:
The threads up top will be organized later so everyone can find things easier, but the updates will be posted in the next few threads!
Starting with this one!! :good::good:
My first thing to finish before I could start assembly of the hardware, was getting all my wiring tucked that would control everything else. I wanted that wiring invisible. The wiring for the fans, the cold cathodes, the strobe lights, (yes I used 2 strobe lights that were meant for a car, but work off a 12v+ system :D )
Plus I had to lap my TRUE Black, all of which needed to be completed before I could mount anything so that it did not get in the way later:
The TRUE BLACK was my hardest lapping yet, it was black and silver anodized, had to get both of those layers gone before revealing the copper. But after all is said and done, the end results truly was worth it.
Lapping steps >> 220grit > 400grit> 600grit> 800grit> 1000grit> 1500grit> 2000grit!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02283.jpg
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02299.jpg
So with all that completed I begin the hardware mounting!
First of course motherboard in, 8pin EPS power cable routed behind the tray, you can see it sticking out up at the top:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02285.jpg
Next our hand picked i7 920 chip, what a great batch, had her up to 4.7 already on air no sweat!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02292.jpg
Mounted in her final resting place!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02294.jpg
Drop in some temp ram, I could not afford the good stuff at this point. :(
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02295.jpg
A little OCZ Freeze, highly recommended!!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02296.jpg
POOF TRUE mounted and getting closer, in this shot you can see one of the strobe lights in the top right, coming down from the top of the case!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02305.jpg
At this point I picked up the pace, next we see both fans mounted on the TRUE, and the first gtx275 mounted in place, as well as the Corsair Ram fan, decals removed all black!
hmmmm where did the wires go? ;)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02308.jpg
We reached test run time, when I hit a wall.
Upon booting up something just wasn't right, my fear set in, as I do not really have time for dead hardware to make my deadline for the competition.
This is when I remember reading on the tech specs for my Corsair HX1000w PSU the input current was 13A and the power cord I had was only 10A?? Hmm could this be the issue? After a quick trip to Tigerdirect, and the location of a 15A power cord, apulled from the back as they do not officially sell them, problems resolved. The psu was not being allowed to pull enough power thus supplying insufficient power to the entire system. This theory was proved accurate, when I of course unplugged the old cord from the wall, and it was very warm to the touch.
Here is an shot of the difference in cord size, this HX1000 means business!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02315.jpg
So she purrs happily along now. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Reveals coming soon - hard drive final mounting, front panel switches for light control, and the pictures that will make you go hmmmmm ;)
A little preview, this case project is called Krypto, why?
In the comic series of Superman, he has a dog named Krypto. Where can we always find man's best friend? At our feet right when we need them, thus my computer will always be right at my feet when I need her. Second I have a play on words, Krypto, being Kryptic (cryptic)
I like my reveals slow and almost painful, building the anticipation of all those watching, making them hungry wanting to come back and see more (at least that is how I get) So I am somewhat Kryptic in my reveals.
The final piece of the puzzle, well the case is the Coolermaster COSMOS after all, and what exactly is the COSMOS?

In its most general sense, a cosmos is an orderly or harmonious system. It originates from a Greek term κόσμος meaning "order, orderly arrangement, ornaments," and is the antithetical concept of chaos. Today the word is generally used as a synonym of the word Universe (considered in its orderly aspect)."
So by this description, COSMOS - an orderly or harmonious system, everything will be in perfectly placement, wiring, lighting, hardware will match not only in color to the rest of the case, but in overall stature. Everything will look as if it was designed or created to be placed and work together.
second meaning is the synonym for the universe - so can the COSMOS be cosmic? Does Superman not originate from a place far away from our very own universe? Would his dog not the same? How can I make this tie in with the rest of the work, to fit in perfect harmony to fit together?
Well this is what I have been planning for months and months, and that reveal will come a little later. :D
But at least now you see that everything was placed exactly this way for a reason, with a purpose, it was a vision in my head, that I executed on paper. The final execution is just how I pictured it, which is almost Cosmic in its placement. ;)

The TRUE is sideways to get the most air out of that top fan, and let me tell you between the two scythe ultra kaze and that top fan (combined around 376cfm) it really moves some air!

Yes sir, not only do they move air, but that lapped true is amazing. So far I have been running it daily at 4.2ghz fans running about half via my fan controller, and idle temps have been about 30C in a 75F room. :good:

not bad at all bro, how's load?
marcam923
09-18-2009, 02:23 PM
Well the room is a bit hotter, which I have noted with air cooling 5 degrees F, can mean a big difference, it is about 80F in here right now, I have been priming (8 threads) for about 15 minutes and temps are floating between 65-70C on the cores through real temp.
Not too bad but I have the volts at 1.4V on the CPU which is much higher than necessary, and I am using the computer while priming. ;)

Ok fellas, next update!
Well what is a custom modded computer, without matching hardware?
So here is what my gtx275 looked like when purchased new:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/marcam923/Project%20KRYPTO/DSC02232.jpg
Here is the outcome after the factory decals were removed, the top was covered with black vinyl:

Yeah I understand about the TRUE, but the way I look at it, more important for me to be crooked in the pics, the way it is supposed to be, then compromising my cooling by continuously swiveling the cooler compromising the thermal compound ;)
I understand on the video card too, alot of what I do is personal taste, I try and make it appealing to everyone, and modders will respect it as can most for the time and effort involved, but I do not expect everyone to like everything about it.
But thanks for the props, I appreciate it, sooooo much time involved!

Hahahaha, yeah tell me about it, I still have a mess to clean...
Actually, the case has filters built into the bottom, which do a pretty good job, mainly for the psu, but there are no filters on the front, the front of the case keeps most stuff out of there. and just wipes right off, I about once a week just wipe the bottom off, and use air to give it a little clean up inside.
Thanks, it was a lot of work, but well worth it! :good:

Thanksbuddy, I must say it was all because my ambient room temp was about 55F, my gf loves me
My i7 was idling at 4.4GHZ at 19C even at 1.435 volts or so she was sitting at 26C.
That's the reason I pushed.
What I was more impressed by is learning the different straps and how to work around them for different memory clocks.
Because of my ram, if I run a lower strap. the 2x800 I get less speed out of my ram, but can bench higher, but running at the 2x1067 strap. I was able to get the memory to run idle, no benching at 860mhz! that's 1720mhz on 1333mhz ram 1.65 volts and stock timings. Not too shabby, but I wanna bench that high and higher ;)

I have run 1.7V just for a short period of time, set to stock voltage in bios, and bump it up through Eleet. This ram will only handle so much, but I can see what a big factor the ram plays in all this.

Not at all, its kinda funny how fast air moves in and out of my case. I smoke so at one point I blew some in the front, and in the 1/2 a sec it took me to get to the side it was gone, finally I blew out a candle and placed it in front of the case to see how quickly it moved through, and the airflow is great! I am looking at getting one of those little smoke machines to properly show this affect, and then I will get some shots and video of it!

Register on the forum, when you are on the contest main page filling out the info, next to forum name, you will see a register button, that will redirect you to register on the forums. Once you register on the forums, say you use your same username, Chicken Patty, then you would enter Chicken Patty, nothing eslse, does that make sense?

I think he voted and saw the results after he placed his vote. However there is another guy in my class, that has a clan, and he has steadily taken the lead.
To win this I am gonna need all the support I can get!

I am just a little upset, because there are a couple worklogs that were completed before this contest, and in the rules, the modifications to the case for entry into this competition could be started no earlier than 2009. This is why I threw most of what I had done to the Cosmos out the window and started from scratch in a new direction.
It just makes me upset that Coolermaster did not really look into this.

The basic jest of it, there are 3 Portuguese contestants. One in each category. All the 600 active members on that forum I linked are part of 2 modding clans.
They are all voting for the 3 Portuguese modders, and no one else, while the rest of the competition is carrying on in the normal fashion.
If something is not done, I am gonna pull from the competition, as well are others, and I will never buy another Coolermaster product, and will most likely be selling the Cosmos also just because of the bad taste in my mouth at this point.
I just don't know and am waiting on word from Coolermaster.

so basically with sooo many people voting for them, it's almost impossible for them to lose, right?

Yep unless Coolermaster steps in, because it specifically states in the rules that this kind of conduct to the extent they are taking it is unfair.
They state it is ok to promote as long as it is within reason. Which what they are doing is not.

Trust me, the 2007 Coolermaster mod competition ended in tragedy, because their marketing director fled with all the prizes, this one is headed in the same direction.
If that happens I will pull out before I am dragged down with it...

Guess it's the problem of running such competitions. It's hard to keep it all fair play without tightening up the rules to be really easy to handle.
Keep on advocating MArc and even if you don't win, get those big-time cheaters out of the competition!

Yeah no those other modders who have done this, are calling me a cheater because I did as the rules stated and let people know of the competition that I was in and would appreciate their votes.
Where as it is not just the Portugese, but the Brazilians I guess too now, who are voting for like modders... It is pretty sad...

Dude that suks ass.... hopefully everything turns out, but I wildn't bet on it. I think when these things turn inyo a pop contest they go to shit, and the meaning is lost.
Yours is clearly one of the best there, if not the best. Screw them, mod on!

Yep, it just sucks that more people do not watch individual worklogs, because the forum they are on it is one mass post, so every member on those forums who goes through modding stuff will see it, as opposed to here, unless I were to go around spamming everyone to get votes...
If they allow their activity, I guess I will have to do that.
You are 100% correct in saying it is going to shit, and has lost the meaning, but if Coolermaster let's it stand, I guess I understand that the contest was just about advertising and traffic, and not about the mods at all

Thanks Supes! :Hi:
I was 170 one time in my life, and that was when I worked out 5 times a week, and did not smoke.
Well so far the LE seems pretty good, not great just good.
Downfalls - Either I hit a wall at 230bclk or the board has, or I need to tighten my tweaking skills on x58. Aesthetically it's great, temps are good, I run at 4.2ghz everyday, minimal voltage bumps with HT, and turbo on.
Gaming seems pretty good, with everything not stable(or at least not tested for stability) my gf's nephew gamed on it for about 3 hours+ playing COD5 with no issues. Been busy with the competition and stuff, need to do some further testing and update to the newest released bios to test further.
My girlfriend's rig I built also uses the LE, and she has a CO i7 920, running at 3.8GHZ everyday, everything on auto with ram adjustments made, adn a slight vcore bump, also on a lapped TRUE black, with one scythe Ultra Kaze runs at 29C idle!
The entire reason I went with the LE is because I could afford to build both of our systems on an x58 platform, buy buying 2 LE's basically at the same cost as my Classy would have cost. Kinda wish I got myself a classy now, but she could not be happier with her rig, so I do not regret the decision.
Will post pictures of her system soon. ;)
All in all, I want a Classy, the LE seems like a very nice gaming/everyday platform, but to reach those high to really high clocks and set some good marks, I think a classy will be in order.
ChickenPatty, if I win a classy will be headed to a rig near me. ;) However currently it seems as if voting is a little goofy in my opinion.
